Oli’s Big Day Leads To Split At Humboldt

Oli Perez hits two bombs in Game 1, drives in seven

ARCATA, Calif. — Sophomore shortstop Oli Perez (Ceres HS) enjoyed the biggest game of her young career to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a split with Cal Poly Humboldt on the final day of the regular season Saturday afternoon at Lumberjack Field.

The Otters took Game 1, 12–4, in five innings before dropping the nightcap, 6–1.

CSUMB closes the regular season at 28–24 overall and 19–17 in CCAA play. The Otters will play Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opening round of the CCAA Tournament Wednesday in Carson.

Cal Poly Humboldt finishes its season at 26–27 and 14–20.

Perez's monster game started with a 2–run homer in the second inning of the opener. She added a grand slam in the third inning and an RBI double in the fourth to tie the school record with 10 total bases.

Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) and Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) added doubles to the 10–hit attack. Abby Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) singled, walked twice and scored three runs.

The nightcap started off on the right note when Perez scored on an error in the second inning. With Cassie Gasper (Merced College/Univ. of Missouri) in the circle, the lead seemed secure.

But the Lumberjacks finally solved Gasper in the fifth, taking advantage of an error, two walks and a hit batter to score five times. The Otter offense wasn't able to respond over the final two frames.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Oli Perez's 2–run double extended the Otter lead to 11–1 in the fourth inning.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Tessa Poirier's sac fly capped a 5–run Humboldt fifth inning.

OLI'S BIG BAT SETS TWO RECORDS… With two home runs and a double in the Game 1 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt, Oli Perez tied a pair of CSUMB records. Her 10 total bases equals the mark set by Julia Garcia at UC San Diego on Mar. 17, 2017. She also became the 15th different Otter to hit two home runs in the same game. The last Otter to do it was Samantha Luna at San Francisco State on Apr. 14, 2017.

…AND NEARLY GETS ANOTHER… Oli Perez's seven RBI in the Game 1 win over Cal Poly Humboldt were one off the Otter record of eight set by Samantha Luna in a win over Holy Names University on Mar. 7, 2017. It's worth noting that Luna's eight RBI came via a pair of grand slams.

TOP 10 PEREZ… Oli Perez moved up to No. 10 on the Otter career home runs list with a pair of long balls Saturday at Cal Poly Humboldt, bringing her total to 14. She needs one more to tie Jamie Moon (2009–12) for ninth place.

PEREZ MOVES UP SEASON HR LIST… With two homers Saturday, Oli Perez moved up to No. 15 on the Otter single–season home runs list with eight. Next up is a quintet of Otters with nine, last accomplished by Bianca Noriega in 2015.

GASPER LEADS THE LEAGUE, AGAIN… Cassie Gasper added four strikeouts to her ledger to end the regular season leading the league in strikeouts with a CSUMB record 161. She also led the league in strikeouts in the COVID–abbreviated 2020 season.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ivana Perez (11), Alyssa Burt (14), Oli Perez (10). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Oli Perez 2 (7,8).

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ashley Honorio (2). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Carson for the opening round of the CCAA Tournament. They'll open tourney play Wednesday (May 4) against Cal State Dominguez Hills. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.
