Otters' Season Ends At CCAA Championship

CSUMB falls to Dominguez Hills in season finale

CARSON, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay softball team saw its 2023 season come to an end Wednesday afternoon with an 8-3 loss to Cal State Dominguez Hills in the opening round of the CCAA Championship Tournament at Toro Diamond.

CSUMB ends its 17th season of NCAA softball with a 28-25 record. The Otters reached the postseason for the 10th time out of 14 opportunities since becoming postseason eligible in 2008.

The Otters appeared poised to keep their season rolling early Wednesday when an Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) single cashed in a leadoff double by freshman Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) in the third. They extended their lead to 3-0 on a 2-run single from Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) in the fourth.

But a pair of errors in the home half of the fourth -- including one on a potential double play grounder -- led to five unearned runs as the lead disappeared in an instant. The Otters had chances to get back in it, but stranded 10 baserunners, including leaving the bases loaded in the sixth.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN... Oli Perez just missed her second grand slam in five days with a long flyout to end the sixth.

ANOTHER WINNING SEASON... Although the season ended on a down note, the Otters finished the 2023 campaign with a 28-25 record. It marks the 12th time in 15 seasons since becoming NCAA eligible in 2008 that the Otter have finished at our above .500.

EXTRA, EXTRA, GRACIE JOINS THE CLUB... Freshman Gracie Strycula joined the extra-base hit club Wednesday. Her third inning double was the first extra-base hit of her collegiate career. She finished her first season as an Otter 7-for-21 (.333) at the plate, including a pair of hits Wednesday.

GASPER LEAVES A LEGACY... Wednesday's game closed the book on a remarkable 2023 season and the remarkable Otter career of pitcher Cassie Gasper. A couple of record she put a bow on Wednesday include the most strikeouts in a season by an Otter (163), lowest ERA in a season (1.36) and a career (1.72).

BACK WHERE SHE BELONGS... By going 2-for-3 in her final collegiate game, Alyssa Burt raised her season batting average from .297 to a team-leading .304. She finished her career hitting .306 while batting .300 or better in a season four times.
