Two Gems, One Win For Otters To Open Series

Gasper and Stetler combine to allow five hits, no earned runs in split with SFSU

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got one of the best doubleheader pitching performances in its storied history in Friday's series–opening doubleheader against San Francisco State. Sadly for Otter fans, CSUMB managed only a split, trading a pair of 2–0 decisions at the Otter Sports Complex.

Senior Cassie Gasper (Merced College/Univ. of Missouri) earned her 13th win of the season with a 2–hit shutout in the opener. She faced just two batters over the minimum, striking out four against no walks to lower her season ERA to 1.10.

Her offense gave her all of the support she would need in the fourth inning, scoring both runs. Ellie Escalante's (Soquel HS) pinch-hit, RBI single was the key blow.

As good a Gasper wasin the opener, sophomore Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/ Tamalpais HS) was even better in the nightcap. Stetler struck out 10, allowing just one walk and a pair of infield singles.

But her defense let her down in the sixth inning, making a pair of errors that accounted for both Gator runs. The Otter offense also went silent, managing just three hits.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ellie Escalante's RBI single capped a 2–run fourth inning. Cassie Gasper retired nine of the final 10 and 18 of the final 19 batters she faced to keep the Gators from sniffing a run.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Two Gators reached on errors and came around to score on a 2–out, infield single in the sixth inning. The Otters went down quietly on 16 pitches in the final two frames.

KKKKKKKKKKASIDY STETLER… Kassidy Stetler collected double-digit strikeouts for the second time in eight days when she fanned 10 Gators in Game 2 versus San Francisco State. She becomes the fourth pitcher in Otter history to fan 10 or more batters in a game in the same season. Stetler struck out 11 against Northwest Nazarene on Mar. 31.

IF IT WASN'T FOR BAD LUCK… Kassidy Stetler has been snake bit over the past eight days. She struck out 11 in a 3–hitter against Northwest Nazarene, only to lose 1–0 on Mar. 31. Friday, she struck out 10 and allowed just two infield singles and no earned runs but lost to San Francisco State, 2–0.

GAME 1 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (11). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA-BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set against San Francisco State with a doubleheader Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. First pitch is scheduled for noon.
