Otters Tie Consecutive Wins Record in Doubleheader Sweep of Chico 4-2, 2-1

Chris Tonna picks up a win and a save as Otters run their win streak to 11 in a row

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
The Otter matched their longest win streak in program history, making it 11 straight with a pair of wins over Chico State 4-2 and 2-1 Friday at the Otter Sports Complex.

After taking a 1-0 lead, the Otters fell behind for the first time in the series, as Chico plated two in the third to go ahead 2-1. That was the only offense that the Wildcats would muster, however, allowing the Otters plenty of time to come from behind. Brady Miguel (Hollister/San Benito HS) knotted things up with an RBI double in the fifth, while JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College) scored on a wild pitch and KW Quilici (College of Alameda) singled Cole Murchison (Toronto, Ont./West Valley College) home in the eighth to give the Otters the eventual winning margin of two runs.

The Otters struck early in game two, plating a pair of runs in the first, and riding that momentum to a 2-1 victory. Engman again was responsible for Otter runs in game two, lacing a double to left field to score Miguel and then scoring on a Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) sacrifice fly.

Otters pitching dazzled in both contests, with Chris Tonna's (Fremont/Chabot College) name shining the brightest. The senior tossed three scoreless innings of relief in game one, picking up the win, and followed that up with a scoreless inning and a third to pick up the save in game two. In total, Otter pitching today (Tonna, Aidan Lee, Ryan Sleeman, Nate Rolicek and Ryan Io) surrendered just three runs on 13 hits and struck out 14 over 16 innings.

GAME ONE WAS OVER WHEN… Chris Tonna retired the side in order in the ninth inning to end the game.

GAME TWO WAS OVER WHEN… Chris Tonna stranded both the tying and go-ahead run on base in the seventh to end the game.

DOUBLE DAY FOR TONNA… For the third consecutive series and fifth time this season, Chris Tonna worked in multiple games in a single series, tossing in both ends of the doubleheader today. Tonna continues to dominate, earning the win and the save today, running his season numbers to 3-2 with 5 saves and a 0.98 ERA.

WELCOME TO MB, AIDAN LEE… Sophomore Aidan Lee made his Otter debut today, earning the start in game one of the doubleheader. Although he tossed just one inning, Lee looked to be in command, retiring the side in order, using just 14 pitches to do so. Lee will look to be yet another solid piece in the Otters pitching arsenal.

11 IN A ROW!... With the doubleheader sweep today, the Otters have now run their winning streak to 11 straight, tying the program record. This is the third Otters team in program history with 11 straight wins, with the most recent coming back in 2015, when the Otters did it between Feb. 14 and Mar. 6. This team will look to set the program record tomorrow in the series finale with Chico.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters and Wildcats will cap their four-game set with a contest scheduled for a 12:00 P.M. first pitch tomorrow.
