Otters Come From Behind to Down Golden Eagles 14-8, Secure Share of CCAA Regular Season Title

Jacob Dressler and Drew Willaims lead explosive offensive effort for Otters

LOS ANGELES –
The Otters closed out their final regular season road trip with a come from behind victory over Cal State L.A. 14-8 Sunday at Reeder Field.

After a sluggish start, the Otters found themselves behind 6-1 through three innings. Monterey Bay chipped away at the deficit in the fourth, courtesy of a Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) sacrifice fly and a Sergio Solis (Ceres/Central Valley HS) two RBI single, and were able to pull ahead in the fifth, as Jacob Dressler (San Jose/West Valley College) knotted things up with a two RBI double, followed by another Solis RBI knock to give the Otters an 8-7 lead. The Otters would go on to score six more unanswered runs before a Golden Eagles solo shot in the ninth, eventually winning 14-8.

Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) logged his second four hit ballgame in as many weeks, finishing with four RBI and a triple shy of the cycle. Jacob Dressler and Cole Murchison (Toronto, ONT./West Valley College) each added three knocks, with Dressler driving in three and Murchison driving in one. Seven Otters recorded hits in the contest, and eight reached base in a team effort of a victory.

The bullpen put together a solid effort after starter Mitchell Torres (Santa Clarita/Mesa CC) was chased with nobody out in the third. The five Otter relievers surrendered just two runs over the next seven innings, with Ryan Io (Hollister/Menlo College) earning his first win of the season, and Chris Tonna (Fremont/Chabot College) notching his 13th career save.

With the win today, the Otters clinched a shar of the regular season CCAA tile, and their magic number is now down to one to clinch the regular season title outright heading into their final series of the season.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Drew Williams singled Chase Lindemann and Sergio Solis home to give the Otters a 14-7 lead in the ninth.

WHAT CAN'T HE DREW?... Drew Williams continued his incredible debut season with the Otters, going 4-for-5 at the plate today with a double, a home run and four RBI. It was Drew's second four hit ballgame in as many weeks, as he now has tallied 60 hits, 32 of which have been of the extra base variety.

NEW FACE AT THE HOT CORNER… Jacob Dressler earned his second consecutive start at third base today, and continued to provide for Coach Walt White. Dressler went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBI today, bringing his weekend totals to 5-for-7 with four RBI. Dressler is proving to be another valuable weapon in the Otters arsenal.

BRAVO TO THE BULLPEN… The Otter bullpen was called upon today to work the final seven innings of this contest, and did a brilliant job keeping the game close so that the offense could generate the comeback. Ryan Io got things started with two innings, allowing just one run on one hit. Following Io's exit, the Otters took the lead, and opted to go to Sonny Brandwood, Colby Harrison, and Christian McInerney, none of which would surrender a run. With the tying run at the plate and two away in the eighth, the Otters turned to their closer, Chris Tonna, who promptly retired the final out of the eighth before getting some insurance in the ninth, eventually earning his seventh save of the season.

THE FINAL WORD... "This series was quite the road CCAA challenge. LA was ready to play and gave us all we could handle. I'm really proud of our competitive spirit. We remained disciplined throughout the comeback today. We have a lot of belief in each other and we were able to get production from different guys each day. Big props to a couple guys that haven't been in as much as they would like, but they always stay prepared and ready for their opportunity. Dressler and McInerney played key roles in our successful weekend. We look forward to getting home and taking on an improving San Marcos ball club." -- Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters welcome Cal State San Marcos to Seaside for their final regular season series of the season. First pitch of the series is set for 3 PM on Thursday, May 4.
