Late Rally Comes Up Short as #18 Otters Split Series with #4 CSUSB

Otter bring the go-ahead run to the plate in the ninth, but fall 5-3

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. –
The Otters and Coyotes duked it out in what proved to be the tightest matchup of their four game set, but it was the Coyotes who did just enough to edge out the Otters and earn the series split 5-3 Sunday at Fiscalini Field.

Behind two runs in the top of the ninth, the Otters put the first two runners on, as Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) led off the inning with a triple followed by Kyle Guerra (San Leandro HS) being plunked by a pitch. A strikeout and a double play, however, would end the Otters last ditch effort, as they fell 5-3.

Hartojo and Dominic Felice (Hollister/MPC) each tallied a pair of hits, with Felice scoring two of the three Otter runs. Brady Miguel (Hollister/San Benito HS), Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) and Kyle Barileau (Valencia/Ohlone College) each were responsible for driving in an Otter run.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… The Otters grounded into a game-ending double play with the tying run on-base.

HARTOJO STAYS HOT… Nico Hartojo picked up a hit in all four games of the series, bringing his series totals at the plate to 10-for-16 with a double, a triple, a home run, and four RBI. Nico's batting average now sits at .408, the best mark in the CCAA.

WELL RESTED… After getting game three of the series off, catcher Dominic Felice looked rested and rejuvenated in game four. The sophomore accounted for a majority of the Otters early offense, going 2-for-4 at the plate and scoring the first two Otter runs of the day.

THE LAST WORD… "This was a really good series between two really good teams. Obviously we would have loved to win all four games, but splitting on the road in the CCAA against good teams is how you ultimately find yourselves playing for a CCAA championship. That's our goal, and this weekend put us a step closer toward that goal. We now move on to another CCAA challenge with Dominguez Hills coming into town." -- Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters welcome Cal State Dominguez Hills to Seaside for a four game CCAA clash. First pitch of the series is set for 3 PM on Friday, Apr. 21.
