#18 Otters Pick Up Statement Victory in Series Opener Against #4 Coyotes

CSUMB piles on 17 hits in 9-4 victory over CSUSB

SAN BERNARDINO, CALIF. –
Kicking off arguably the most anticipated baseball series of the 2023 CCAA season, Cal State Monterey Bay defeated the Coyotes of Cal State San Bernardino 9-4 Friday night at Fiscalini Field.

After two scoreless frames for both sides, the Otters exploded for seven runs in the top of the third, headlined by home runs for Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) and Brady Miguel (Hollister/San Benito HS). This surge would carry the Otters all the way to the finish line, as San Bernardino would be unable to get any closer than a five run deficit throughout the remainder of the contest.

Ryan Platero (Hollister/MPC) tossed an absolute gem, going seven innings full, and holding the explosive Coyote offense to just one run on five hits. Meanwhile, the Otters were able to chase Platero's opposite number with one out in the fourth.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Chase Lindemann scored on a Drew Williams groundout to push the Otters lead back seven runs in the top of the ninth.

MULTI-HIT MANIA… Five different Otters logged three-hit ball games against the Coyotes this evening. Brady Miguel, Drew Williams, Nico Hartojo, Dominic Felice and Chase Lindemann all were big parts of the offensive fireworks. This group combined for 15 hits, seven runs scored and eight runs driven in in the Otter victory.

PRACTICALLY PERFECT PLATERO… Ace of the staff Ryan Platero continued to carve through opposing lineups, picking up his second seven inning performance today. Platero is now a perfect 5-0 on the season with a solid 3.12 ERA, as opposing batters are hitting just .226 against him.

ALONE AT THE TOP… With his start in today's contest, Kyle Guerra has now appeared in 184 games, more than any other Otter player in program history. Guerra surpassed Tommy George, who held the record of 183 games played since 2013.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will be back in action in San Bernardino tomorrow for a doubleheader clash with the Coyotes. First pitch of game one is set for 1 PM.
