Otters Come From Behind to Earn Series Sweep Over Gators

Mitchell Torres goes the distance in his first Otter start, downing S.F. State 5-1

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
Cal State Monterey Bay Baseball completed the series sweep of San Francisco state, defeating the Gators 5-1 on Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.

Mitchell Torres (Santa Clarita/Mesa CC) earned his first start as an Otter and mowed through the Gator lineup, using 121 pitches in the complete game victory. Torres surrendered just one run on five hits and a walk, while fanning eight.

The Otters fell into a 1-0 hole early, but responded with five runs in the sixth to earn the victory. That sixth inning featured a three-run rocket off the bat of Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) as well as RBI from Dominic Felice (Gilroy/MPC) and Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC).

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… The Otters plated five runs in the sixth, chasing the Gators starter from the game.

TORRES, TAKE A BOW… After a stellar outing out of the bullpen last weekend, Mitchell Torres was given the start in game four against S.F. State, and quickly showed why the Otter coaching staff holds him in such high regard. The sophomore southpaw became the first Otter pitcher since Greg Steinbeck (Apr. 27, 2019) to toss a complete nine inning game, en route to his first victory as an Otter.

TWO FOR DREW… Drew Williams provided the biggest hit in this one, blasting a no-doubt home run over the right field fence, giving the Otters a 3-1 lead in the sixth. It was the second blast off of Williams' bat this weekend, as he now leads CSUMB with five home runs.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… The Otters earned their first series sweep of the season this weekend against the Gators. Last season, the Otters notched three series sweeps en route to the CCAA Regular Season Title.

THE LAST WORD… "It's hard to win a game in the CCAA let alone win a series, and better yet sweep a really good team in S.F. State. Mitchell Torres was really good today. He pounded the strike zone and was efficient all day. I'm proud of the way we competed all weekend. It's a long season and we will need to continue to get a little better every week. Next weekend will be another challenge against a strong Cal Poly Pomona ball club and we will need to be at our best." – Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will be back on the road next weekend, as they head to Southern California for a four game set with the Broncos of Cal Poly Pomona. The series will kick off on Friday, Mar. 10 with a 5:00 P.M. first pitch.
