Gasper’s Gem, Otter Bombs Produce Sweep

Cassie Gasper throws 1-hitter, more Otter homers power sweep of East Bay

HAYWARD, Calif. — For the second consecutive day, Cal State Monterey Bay used a sparking pitching performance and the long ball to find success against Cal State East Bay. Saturday afternoon, it was a Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) 1-hitter and two more home runs that paced the Otters to a 6–0, 8–4 road sweep of the Pioneers.

The wins lift CSUMB to 11–8 overall and 8–4 in the CCAA. East Bay dropped to 12–12 and 5–7 as CSUMB took the series three games to one.

Gasper (6–4) was in complete control throughout the opener. She allowed a 2–out single in the first inning before retiring 13 consecutive Pioneers. In total, she set down 21 of the 23 batters she faced.

Ally Alcayaga's (Sonoma Valley HS) 2–run single in the first inning provided Gasper all the support she would need. Alcayaga added a solo shot in the seventh to close the scoring.

Haylee Clay's (Whittier/Univ. of Hawaii) bases-loaded triple highlighted a 4–run second inning that put CSUMB in the driver's set early in the nightcap. But East Bay scratched out a run in the second and two more in the fourth to chase starter Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS), who threw a 4–hit shutout Friday afternoon.

That's when sophomore Savannah Madrigal (Simi Valley/Chaminade Prep) stepped up in relief with the best outing of her young career. She stranded a pair of runners in scoring position to escape the jam in the fourth and keep the game tied. She finished her day with 2 1/3 scoreless innings of relief.

Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) made her a winner with a solo home run in the sixth to put CSUMB on top to stay at 5–4. A 2–run single by pinch hitter Jessica Kim (La Habra/Sunny Hills HS) and an run scoring knock by Perez in the seventh closed the scoring.

Gasper threw 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief for her first save of 2023.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN… Alyssa Burt's RBI double capped a 3–run Otter first. With Cassie Gasper in control, East Bay never got the potential tying run as far as the on deck circle over the final six innings.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN… a run-scoring single by Ivana Perez capped a 4–run Otter seventh that put CSUMB on top, 8–4.

WELCOME TO THE WINNER'S CIRCLE… Sophomore Savannah Madrigal pitched 2 1/3 innings of scoreless relief to earn her first collegiate victory Saturday at Cal State East Bay.

THE OTTER POWER COMPANY… Thanks to Ally Alcayaga in Game 1 and Ivana Perez in Game 2, the Otters finished the series at Cal State East Bay with four home runs. It's their most homers in a series since they hit four against San Francisco State Mar. 3–4, 2018.

GASPER SAVES THE DAY… Cassie Gasper earned her first save of 2023 and her fourth as an Otter with 1 1/3 innings of perfect relief in Saturday's nightcap at Cal State East Bay. She now is tied with Jessica Boyle (2006–09) for No. 3 on the Otter career saves list.

GASPER THROWS GOOSE EGGS… Cassie Gasper earned her eighth shutout as an Otter with Saturday's 6–0 victory at Cal State East Bay. She tied Diane Ortiz (2010–11) for No. 5 on the Otter career shutouts list. It's worth noting that all four players above her played four seasons as Otters.

GAME 1 EXTRA–BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ivana Perez (4). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Ally Alcayaga (2).

GAME 2 EXTRA–BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Alyssa Burt (4), Abby Alcayaga (4). TRIPLES: Haylee Clay (2). HOME RUNS: Ivana Perez (3).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters take a break from CCAA action with six consecutive nonconference games. They'll start by welcoming Minnesota State Moorhead for a doubleheader Friday (Mar. 10) at the Otter Sports Complex.
