Everything Goes Well In Sweep Of Urban Knights

12-run inning leads Otters to 7-0, 14-2 wins

SEASIDE, Calif. — What turned out to be a beautiful day weather-wise was even more beautiful from a softball perspective as Cal State Monterey Bay put it all together for a 7–0, 14–2 sweep of Academy of Art Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Blue skies all afternoon provided ideal conditions and the Otters took full advantage. The offense exploded for 21 runs and 25 hits while the pitchers limited the Urban Knights to two runs (one earned) while striking out 13 and walking one in 12 innings of work.

Otter bats made Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) a winner in the opener by scoring three times in the first inning. Alyssa Burt's (Garden Grove/Pacific HS) 2–out, 2–run single was the big blow.
Gasper scattered two hits over five shutout innings before sophomore Summer Voth (Calabasas HS) closed the door with two scoreless innings of relief.

Academy of Art surprised Game 2 starter Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) with a pair of runs in the first inning. The Otter sophomore quickly slammed the door shut, however, and retired the final 13 Urban Knights in order to give her offense time to respond. She matched her career high with eight strikeouts despite throwing just five innings.

That response came in the form of a 12–run second inning that featured 11 hits and four doubles. The Otters scored eight runs before recording their first out in the inning.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Alyssa Burt's 2–run single highlighted a 3–run Otter first. The Urban Knights never got the potential tying run to the plate over the final six innings.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… a 2–run single by Lauren Bullis put the finishing touches on a 12–run Otter second. Academy of Art did not get another runner on base over the final four innings.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Three Otters collected their first collegiate hits in Game 2 Saturday versus Academy of Art. Lauren Bullis, Gracie Strycula and Karizma Ruiz all hit singles. Bullis' knock also drove in the first two RBI of her career.

THE CENTURY CLUB… Alyssa Burt became the 10th player in Otter history to reach 100 career RBI with four in Saturday's sweep of Academy of Art. She now has 102 and needs six more to pass Jamie Moon and Jackie Serna for eighth place.

ALMOST A BAKER'S DOZEN… The 12 runs scored by the Otters in the second inning of Saturday's 14–2 win over Academy of Art were the second most ever scored in an inning in program history. The record was 13 scored against Cal State San Bernardino on Feb. 24, 2012. It marked the fifth time ever that the Otters posted double–digit runs in one inning.

DOUBLE THE FUN… The Otters hit five doubles in Saturday's 14–2 win over Academy of Art. That mark ranks No. 8 in the CSUMB record book.

GAME 1 EXTRA–BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Oli Perez (3). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None

GAME 2 EXTRA–BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ivana Perez (5), Oli Perez 2 (5), Kieley Ganaden (3), Abby Alcayaga (5)

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their bye week by hosting Minnesota State Moorhead for a doubleheader Sunday at 2 p.m.
