Otters Sweep Dragons, Run Win Streak To Seven

CSUMB beats Minnesota State Moorhead 3-1, 7-1

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay rode two strong pitching performances to its sixth and seventh consecutive wins with a sweep of Minnesota State Moorhead Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex. CSUMB won the opener 3–1 and took the nightcap 7–1.

The Otters improved to 15–8 with the wins and have extended their winning streak to their longest since winning 14 in a row from Mar. 12 through Apr. 8 last season. MSUM fell to 11–6 with the losses.

The Otter offense came up with some key hits, but pitching carried the day Sunday. Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) was masterful in the opener, striking out nine and scattering five hits to improve to 8–4.

She got a big assists on defense — two of them, in fact — when Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) and Oli Perez (Ceres HS) combined for a relay throw to gun down the potential tying run at the plate on Mack Gallagher's RBI double in the fifth. Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) made her a winner with a 2–run double in the home half of the inning that broke a 1–1 tie.

As good as Gasper was in the opener, Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) was even better in the nightcap. The sophomore righty needed just 85 pitches to tame the Dragons, scattering five hits against no walks.

The Otters got all of the runs they would need in the third inning when Oli Perez hit a towering home run to straightaway center to give Stetler a 2–0 lead. CSUMB took advantage of some loose Dragon defense to add a run in the fifth and four more in the sixth, removing all doubt from the outcome.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cassie Gasper coaxed pinch hitter Eliyah McCarthy to ground out, ending the sixth inning with the potential trying runs on base.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… a hard hit grounder from Oli Perez went through the legs of both the shortstop and left fielder as Ivana Perez came in to score the third Otter run. Stetler retired the final nine Dragons in order to secure the win.

BIG WEEKEND FOR ABBY… Abby Alcayaga finished Sunday's doubleheader 3-for-6 with a pair of runs scored. Including the sweep of Academy of Art on Saturday, Alcayaga ended the weekend 6-for-12 with a double, four runs and four RBI.

PEREZ TIES PEREZ… Oli Perez hit her third home run of the season in Sunday's 7–1 win over Minnesota State Moorhead. She tied Ivana Perez for the team lead.

OFFENSE ON THE RISE… After a sluggish start, the Otters have started, well, slugging. They lifted their team batting average to .282 this weekend, good for the No. 3 spot in the CCAA. They lead the league with 39 doubles and are ranked second with nine home runs.

PITCHING DOES ITS PART… The Otter pitching staff has been even better than the offense this season. The Otters rank No. 2 in the league with a 1.40 team ERA. Their 123 strikeouts are tops in the CCAA

GAME 1 EXTRA–BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Ally Alcayaga (9). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None

GAME 2 EXTRA–BASE HITS… DOUBLES: Jessica Kim (6). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Oli Perez (3)

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to CCAA action by hosting Sonoma State for a key 4–game series Friday and Saturday (Mar. 17–18). First pitch Friday is scheduled for 1 p.m.
