Otters Grind Out Split To Take Series At Stanislaus

CSUMB loses 2-1 in 8, wins 3-2 to win series 3-1

TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay found a way Saturday, rallying for a run in the seventh inning of Game 2 to earn a doubleheader split with Stanislaus State at Warrior Stadium.

Stanislaus rallied for two late runs to take the opener, 2–1, in eight innings. Alyssa Burt's (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) clutch 2–out single in the seventh inning of the nightcap secured a 3–2 win for the Otters.

In a weekend dominated by pitching — no team collected more than eight hits in any of the four games — CSUMB found a way to win the series, three games to one. CSUMB (19–12, 12–8 CCAA) is in a virtual tie for third place in the CCAA race as the teams break for the Tournament of Champions next weekend.

Burt's RBI single staked the Otters to an early lead in the opener, but a key error in the sixth inning led to an unearned run that forced extras. Madison Flexser's RBI double with two outs in the eighth gave Stanislaus the win.

The Warriors jumped to a 2–0 lead in the first inning of Game 2, but starter Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley, Tamalpais HS) settled in to shutout Stanislaus over the final 6 2/3. Haylee Clay (Whittier/Univ. of Hawaii) pulled one run back with an RBI knock in the third inning before Oli Perez (Ceres HS) tied it with her team–leading fourth home run of the season in the fourth.

That set the stage for the dramatic finish. Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) led off the seventh with a single, stole second and was sacrificed to third. With two outs, Burt carved a single over short to bring Perez home with the winner.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Madison Flexser's double with two outs brought home the walk-off run.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kassidy Stetler got three consecutive pop ups after a leadoff single in the seventh to seal the victory.

HOME AWAY FROM HOME… Saturday's games at Stanislaus State were the third and fourth of nine consecutive games the Otters will play in Turlock, including seven consecutive that they will play at Warrior Stadium. CSUMB returns to the Central Valley for the Tournament of Champions presented by the City of Turlock Mar. 30–Apr. 1.

OTTERS CAN RUN… The Otters were active on the base baths Saturday, stealing five bases in the doubleheader. The Otters entered the weekend with 15 steals and now are 20-for-24 on the season.

BURT STAYS HOT… Alyssa Burt ran her hitting streak to five games with a pair of hits in both ends of Saturday's doubleheader. She hit .615 (8-for-13) with a pair of doubles and four RBI to lead the offense this weekend. She's hitting a team–best .379 over her last 10 games.

DOUBLE THE FUN… Alyssa Burt collected her 45th career double Saturday at Stanislaus State in Game 2. She needs four more to pass Madi Casto (2014–17) for No. 5 on the Otter career list.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… CSUMB heads right back to Turlock for the Tournament of Champions presented by the City of Turlock Mar. 30–Apr. 1. The Otters begin tournament play Thursday (Mar. 30) against Azusa Pacific at Warrior Stadium. First pitch will be at 4 p.m.
