Otters Mash 10 Extra Base Hits to Complete Sweep of Sonoma State

Engman’s three double headline Otter extra-base hit parade in 12-3 win over Seawolves

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
CSUMB Baseball picked up their second consecutive home series sweep, defeating Sonoma State 12-3 Sunday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters fell behind 1-0 early, but quickly erased that deficit with a three-run bottom of the first, and rode the momentum to victory.

JJ Engman (Renton, Wash./Shoreline College) led the group of free-swinging Otters with a 4-for-4 day, including three doubles, four runs scored and an RBI. Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) drove in four runs, while Nico Hartojo (Arvada, Colo./MPC) drove in three. Both Hartojo and Williams launched three run blasts in the six run sixth.

Mitchell Torres (Santa Clarita/Mesa CC) earned his second consecutive home win, tossing five innings and allowing three runs on five hits. Ryan Io (Hollister/Menlo College) and Colby Harrison (Chico/Sacramento City College) slammed the door shut, each with two shutout innings.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Drew Williams blasted a three-run home run to push the Otters ahead 10-3 in the sixth. It was the Otters second three-run blast of the inning.

UNSTOPPABLE ENGMAN… JJ Engman continues to thrive since his return to the lineup last weekend. Today, Engman went a perfect 4-for-4 at the plate with three doubles and four runs scored. In his eight games back, Engman is now batting at .407 with nine runs scored and 11 RBI.

DOUBLE DIGIT XBH… For the second time this season, the Otters logged double digit extra base hits, tallying seven doubles and three home runs in the victory. Even more impressive, the 10 extra base hits were split amongst seven different players.

LATE GAME LONG BALLS… All three of the Otter home runs came in or after the sixth inning, each providing a massive blow to the Seawolves' chance at a comeback. Nico Hartojo left the yard first, turning a one run lead to a four run lead with one swing of the bat in the sixth. Drew Williams also left the yard in the sixth, opening the lead up to 10-3. For good measure, Cole Murchison left the yard in the bottom of the eighth to push the Otter lead to nine runs with one frame left.

THE FINAL WORD… "Another challenging weekend in the CCAA. SSU has a great history of success and it took a great effort from our entire roster to win the series. We need to keep getting a little better each week and understand that this conference can humble you in a heartbeat, especially if you are not prepared to play. Our team will look to get in a good week of practice and then head out to Hayward to take on a really good East Bay ball club." – Head Coach Walt White

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will close out their five game homestand with a midweek non-conference bout with the Oaks of Menlo College. First pitch is set for 6:00 P.M. on Tuesday, Mar. 21.
