Gasper Gem Helps Otters Split With Seawolves

Cassie Gasper tosses a 3-hit shuotut as CSUMB splits with No. 21 Sonnoma State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) tossed a 3–hit shutout to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to a split with No. 21 Sonoma State Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters took the opener, 1–0, before Sonoma rallied for four unanswered runs to win the nightcap, 6–4.

The split leaves CSUMB at 16–9 overall and 9–4 in the CCAA. Sonoma State is now 15–4 and 9–3.

Gasper (9–4) and Sonoma starter Bailee Reed (9–2) entered the day as the winningest pitchers in the CCAA. And the expected pitcher's duel lived up to the hype.

The Seawolves got runners to second and third with one out in the first before Gasper escaped her only jam of the day with a strikeout and ground out. The only other times Sonoma touched her was with 2–out singles in the second and third innings.

Gasper retired the final 13 Seawolves she faced, finishing the day with seven strikeouts and just one walk.

For her part, Reed worked through the CSUMB lineup twice before the Otters finally solved the junior righty. A 1–out single in the fifth by Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) followed by an Ashley Honorio (Stockton/Bear Creek HS) bunt single and throwing error set the table for Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State), who laced a 2–out single to left to drive home the game's only run.

Anna Zoia Buescher led off Game 2 with a homer and the Seawolves added an unearned run in the first inning to jump to a quick lead. But the Otters chased Sonoma starter Nichole Sarra with four runs in the home half of the fourth. A 2–run single from Oli Perez (Ceres HS) was the big blow in that rally.

But the Seawolves took advantage of some spotty Otter defense to score four unanswered runs and grab a 6–4 lead heading into the seventh. CSUMB brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh but couldn't break through.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ivana Perez singled home Kieley Ganaden in the fifth inning. Sonoma didn't sniff a run against Cassie Gasper over the final six innings.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… A diving, over-the-shoulder catch by Anna Zoia Buescher robbed Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School For Girls) of what would have been a game-tying, inside the park home run to end the game.

A CLEAN SHEET… Cassie Gasper tossed her ninth shutout as an Otter in Friday's 1–0 victory over Sonoma State. That mark ranks No. 5 in Otter history.

ANOTHER ONE IN THE WIN COLUMN… Cassie Gasper's 1–0 win in Game 1 was her 23rd as an Otter. She needs one more to tie Jensen Main for No. 6 on the Otter career wins list.

TEST AGAINST THE BEST… Friday's 1– win over No. 21 Sonoma State was CSUMB's 57th win against a nationally–ranked opponent since the program began in 2006. CSUMB is 57–74 all–time against Top 25 opponents.

GAME 1 EXTRA–BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

GAME 2 EXTRA–BASE HITS… DOUBLES: None. TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 4–game set with Sonoma State with a doubleheader starting Saturday at noon.

GO OTTERS!
