Otters Rally Late to Down Conference Foe Fresno Pacific

Gabri Vincze’s late game heroic will Otters to 8-7 victory over FPU

SEASIDE, CALIF. –
Cal State Monterey Bay Water Polo led for just 0:48 seconds in their matchup with Fresno Pacific, but when the clock hit 0:00, it was the Otters who ended up with the victory, 8-7 Saturday afternoon at the Otter Tank.

The Otters used four unanswered goals in the final seven minutes of the game en route to their victory over the Sunbirds. Gabri Vincze (Newbury Park/Agoura HS) would score the eventual game-winner with 30 seconds to go, and then would provide the field block on the ensuing defensive possession to secure the Otter victory.

Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) led the Otter attack with four goals and an assist. Allyson Ainsworth (West Sacramento/River City HS) provided three assists, while Vincze and Kaya Eaton (San Diego/Helix HS) each added a goal and an assist. Megan Taylor (San Juan Capistrano/Capo Valley HS) played the entirety of the match in goal, and came up with 11 saves, allowing a season low seven goals in the victory.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Gabri Vincze stopped an FPU equalizer attempt with less than 10 seconds to go.

FOUR FOR FORTUNE… Despite her prolonged absence in February, Shelby Fortune continues to lead all Otter goal scorers. Her four-goal performance today brought her season total to 24, matching her goal tally from last season in eight less games.

EVENLY MATCHED… This was the fifth consecutive meeting between the Otters and Sunbirds decided by a one goal margin. The Otters have found themselves victorious in the last three meetings, but were able to best FPU at the Otter Tank for the first time since 2017 today.

A HELPING HAND… Although she didn't find the back of the net, Allyson Ainsworth had her fingerprints all over today's victory. The sophomore out of West Sacramento provided three assists in the victory, including on the game-winner scored by Gabri Vincze. Ainsworth now ranks second on the team with 13 assists this season.

THE FINAL WORD… "This was a great win for us. We both executed our game plan and demonstrated our ability to adapt. What was essential in bringing home the win was the energy on the bench and leadership in the water. I'd also like to give a huge shout out to our alumni in stands" Head Coach Emily Schmit

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will play their annual alumni game tomorrow at noon, and will be back to countable competition on Saturday, March 18, when they welcome Biola University to the Otter Tank. First Sprint is scheduled for 1:00 PM.
