Otters Split Again On Day 2 Of Concordia Kickoff Classic

CSUMB beats Hawaii Pacific, falls to Azusa Pacific

IRVINE, Calif. — Day 2 of the Concordia Kickoff Classic followed a familiar pattern as Cal State Monterey Bay lost a tough pitcher's duel in its early game before rallying to earn a split in the nightcap at Great Park.

Senior ace Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) took a hard-luck loss in Saturday's opener, falling to Azusa Pacific 2–0 despite not allowing an earned run. Sophomore Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) earned the victory in the nightcap, beating Hawaii Pacific 7–4.

After fanning eight in the season opener Friday morning, Gasper struck out seven APU batters Saturday. She scattered four hits, but the Cougars broke through with a pair of unearned runs on a sixth–inning throwing error to account for all of the game's scoring.

The Otters brought the tying run to the plate in the seventh inning, but could not break through.

Stetler also threw a strong game in the win over Hawaii Pacific. Like Gasper, she did not allow an earned run as all four HPU scores came courtesy of five Otter errors.

Sophomore shortstop Oli Perez (Ceres HS) had the big blow with a 2–run triple to highlight a 4–run third inning that blew the game open for CSUMB. Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) and Ashley Honorio (Stockton/Bear Creek HS) also doubled as part of the 10–hit Otter attack.
 

THE AZUSA PACIFIC GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Pinch-hitter Lauren Bullis went down swinging for the final out representing the tying run.

THE HAWAII PACIFIC GAME WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Abby Alcayaga's RBI single followed a 2–run triple from Oli Perez, extending CSUMB's lead to 6–1 in the third inning.

HANG 10… The Otters pounded out a season–high 10 hits in the win over Hawaii Pacific.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Another Otter rookie made her collegiate debut Saturday as freshman Jackie Perales (Anaheim/Sunny Hills HS) saw action as a pinch run in the game versus Azusa Pacific.

IN A GIVING MOOD… Saturday was a tough day for Otter fielders, who committed a combined eight errors in two games. The eight errors led directly to all six runs allowed.
