Otters Split Pair On Opening Day At CUI Kickoff Classic

CSUMB falls to Colorado Mesa 2-1, beats Central Washington 4-1

IRVINE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball opened its 2023 season with a split on Day 1 of the Concordia Kickoff Classic Friday at Great Park. The Otters dropped a heart–breaker in the opener, falling 2–1 to Colorado Mesa, before bouncing back with a 4–1 victory over Central Washington.

Senior Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) scattered five hits and struck out eight while taking the hard-luck loss in the opener. Sophomore Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) also threw a 5–hitter, striking out a career–high seven, to defeat CWU.

CSUMB out-hit Mesa 6–5 in Game 1, but a 2-out triple and an infield single allowed the Mavericks to take a 1–0 lead in the third. A sac fly in the top of the seventh gave CMU what proved to be a crucial insurance run.

Singles by sophomore Oli Perez (Ceres HS) and freshman Jessica Kim (La Habra/Sunny Hills HS) set the table in the bottom of the seventh for an RBI knock from senior Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacific HS). But with two on an one out, pinch-runner Sofia Cervantes was caught trying to advance to third on a fly ball for the third out to end the rally.

As the designated visiting team, CSUMB jumped on Central Washington early with a 3–run second inning. A 2–run single off the bat of sophomore Ashley Honorio (Stockton/Bear Creek HS) was the big blow. Freshman Gracie Strycula (San Dimas HS) made her first hit an RBI single in the seventh to add some superfluous insurance.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Mesa right fielder Rylee Crouch caught Sophia Cervantes trying to advance to third on a fly ball for the game's final out.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Ivana Perez returned the favor, throwing out Sasha Mitchell trying to advance to third for an inning-ending double play to thwart the final Wildcat rally in the bottom of the sixth.

FOR OPENERS… With 2–1 loss to Colorado Mesa, Otter softball dipped to 10–7 in season openers dating to its inaugural campaign in 2006.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Three Otters received their collegiate softball baptisms Friday: Ellie Escalante, Jessica Kim and Gracie Strycula. Strycula and Kim both collected their first collegiate hits.

DOUBLE THE FUN… With a pair of doubles in the opener against Colorado Mesa, sophomore Ally Alcayaga moved up to sole possession of 15th place on the Otter career doubles list with 18. Next up are Shae Olds and Angelina Orozco with 20.

CAREER HIGH FOR STETLER… With seven strikeouts in Friday's win over Central Washington, Kassidy Stetler established her career–high. Her previous best was six set twice in 2022.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… Kassidy Stetler (W [1–0], CG, 7.0 IP, 1 R, 5 H, 7K); Cassie Gasper (L [0–1], CG, 7.0 IP, 2 R, 5 H, 8 K, 0 BB); Ally Alcayaga (2x5, 2 2B, R, SB); Ivana Perez (3x7, R); Alyssa Burt (2x6, R, 2 RBI); Ashley Honorio (2x7, 2 RBI).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue play with a pair of games at the Concordia Kickoff Classic Saturday. They'll open Saturday action against Azusa Pacific at 11:30 a.m. before meeting Hawaii Pacific at 6:30 p.m.
