AZUSA, CALIF. – Following their season opening victory, CSUMB Baseball returned to action at the Cougar Baseball Complex, however, it was the Cougars who ended this evening victorious on both ends of the double header 17-12 and 10-0.
Game one featured a heroic comeback attempt from the Otters, who found themselves in an eight-run hole through four innings. CSUMB battled all the way back to tie things up at 12 all, but a pair of late home runs led APU to victory.
The Otters found themselves in an early hole again in game two, but were not able to put together offensive fireworks in the second game of the day.
Highlighting game one was Robbie Treto (Arleta/Pierce College), who became just the second Otter in program history with a three home run game. Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) added a home run, while Dominic Felice (Hollister/MPC) went 3-4 at the plate.
Lefty Michael Potter (Elk Grove/Sheldon HS) was superb out of the bullpen, tossing a pair of scoreless, hitless ball, allowing the Otter offense the time to pull back level.
GAME ONE WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Taylor Oullette entered the game facing the tying run and no outs in the top of the eighth and retired all three batters to keep the Cougars ahead at 15-12.
GAME TWO WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Casey O'Laughlin hit a third inning grand slam to push the Cougars ahead 7-0.
IN THE RECORD BOOKS… Robbie Treto had a debut to remember, blasting three home runs in his first appearance as an Otter. Treto joins Hayden Duer as the only Otters to hit three home runs in a single game.
SHOWING FORTITUDE… Down 12-4, the Otters mustered up eight unanswered runs to tie the score at 12-12 in game two of this series. This marks the largest deficit erased by an Otter team in over a decade.
PILING UP HOME RUNS… Following their four home run game from last night, the Otters launched four more home runs in game two of the series, making them the first team in program history with back-to-back four home run games.
THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will hope to earn a split with Azusa Pacific in game four of the series. First pitch is set for 12 PM at the Cougar Baseball Complex.
GO OTTERS!
