Otters Earn First Sweep Of Season in Home Openers

CSUMB dodges the rain to Down San Bernardino 3-2 (9) and 5-2

SEASIDE, Calif. — Rain delayed the start of Cal state Monterey Bay's 2023 home-opening series with Cal State San Bernardino Friday at the Otter Sports Complex. It was worth the wait for Otter fans, however, as CSUMB swept the Coyotes 3–2 and 5–2 for its first sweep of the season.

Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) was stellar in the opener, allowing just one earned run while striking out a career-high 10 in the complete game victory Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS), Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) and Jessica Kim (La Habra/Sunny Hills HS) hit consecutive doubles in the third inning to highlight the 13–hit attack. Kim walked the game off with a bases–loaded sac fly in the ninth.

Sophomore Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS) was sharp in the nightcap, earning her third with a career–high eight strikeouts. She allowed two runs on two hits in the first inning then shutout the Coyotes over the final six frames on just three hits.

Her offense gave her all the support she would need in the home half of the first when an RBI knock by Ganaden and a 2–run double from Alyssa Burt (Garden Grove/Pacifica HS) counter the San Bernardino runs.

Alcayaga led the Otter attack with five hits, including two doubles and a triple. Ganaden counted a double amongst her four hits while Burt finished with three hits, including two in the opener.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Jessica Kim's line drive to deep left in the ninth inning plated Haylee Clay with the walk-off run.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kassidy Stetler struck out the side in the seventh to finish her sixth complete game of 2023.

HOW SWEEP IT IS… Friday's sweep of Cal State San Bernardino was CSUMB's first sweep of 2023. The Otters opened the season by alternating wins and losses through their first 11 games prior to Friday.

CASSIE WITH A K…10 OF THEM… Cassie Gasper tied her career high with 10 strikeouts in the 3–2 win over San Bernardino Friday afternoon. It marked the 10th time she fanned 10 batters in her career. The last time she did it came in a win over UC San Diego on Feb. 28, 2020.

KASSIDY WITH A K…EIGHT OF THEM… We know Kassidy already is spelled with a K, but allow us to take a little poetic license in pointing out that Kassidy Stetler fanned a career–high eight Coyotes in Friday 5–2 win over Cal State San Bernardino. Her previous high was seven in a win over Central Washington back on Feb. 3.

THE GIRL WITH THE GOLDEN GUN… Sophomore catcher Ally Alcayaga continues to gun down would-be base stealers at a prolific rate. She threw out another potential thief Friday against Cal State San Bernardino and now has nabbed six of 10 who have dared to run on her in 2023.
