Otters Earn Series Win With Saturday Split

Gasper wins her fourth straight; Ivan Perez, Oli Perez and Kieley Ganaden homer

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay softball used its first run-rule victory of the season to earn a Saturday split with Cal State San Bernardino, taking the opener 10–1 in five innings before falling 3–2 in the series finale Saturday afternoon at the Otter Sports Complex.

Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) earned her fourth consecutive victory in Game 1, allowing just one run on five hits over five innings. Jessica Kim's (La Habra/Sunny Hills HS) 2–run double in the first inning put the Otters on top to stay. Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) led off the third inning with her second home run of the season before Kieley Ganaden's (North Salinas HS) first collegiate home run, a 3–run shot, capped a 7–run Otter fourth that iced the game.

Things went sideways in the nightcap for the Otters, however. After beating San Bernardino starter Samantha Vargas twice in the first three games, Vargas quieted the Otter bats in the finale. She held CSUMB to six hits, although one of those was a 2–run bomb from Oli Perez (Ceres HS) that gave CSUMB a 2–1 lead in the second.

The Otters had a chance to add to that in the fifth inning, but had a runner thrown out at the plate on a call that could easily have gone the other way. The Coyotes scored the game winner in the seventh when Ivana Perez couldn't locate a short fly ball in a brutal sun, allowing the go-ahead run to score from second.

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Kieley Ganaden's 3–run bomb capped a 7–run Otter fourth that gave CSUMB a 10–1 lead.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Samantha Vargas fanned Haylee Clay with the potential tying run on second base to end the game.

POWER SURGE… After hitting just one home run as a team through the first 12 games of the season, the Otters brought out the big bats Saturday, bopping three long balls. Ivana Perez hit her second collegiate home run (and second of the season), hitting the foul pole down the left field line. Oli Perez added her first of 2023, hitting the scoreboard. Kieley Ganaden hit her first collegiate homer over the trees in right.

STARTING STRONG…At 5–3 after eight conference games, CSUMB is off to its best start in CCAA play since the 2017 CCAA Champion team opened 7–1. The last three times the Otters started 5–3 or better in conference play they went on to win the CCAA title (2014, 2015, 2017).

GASPER FOR THE WIN… With two more victories this weekend, Cassie Gasper now has 18 for her career, tying Angela Cabral (2008). for No. 8 on the Otter career wins list. With her next victory, she'll tie Kylie Linnane (2010–12) for No. 7.

GASPER REACHES THE DOUBLE CENTURY MARK… Cassie Gasper fanned 13 Coyotes this weekend, bringing her Otter career total to 2011. She passed Diane Ortiz (208 in 2010–11) for No. 5 on the Otter career strikeout list. All four pitchers ahead of her pitched four seasons at CSUMB.

STETLER CRACKS THE TOP 20… Kassidy Stetler fanned 14 Coyotes this weekend and cracked the Top 20 on the Otter career strikeouts list. She now has 77, vaulting her all the way up to 17th place, where she is tied with Shelair Rowell (2009).

EXTRA BASES, GAME 1… DOUBLES: Jessica Kim (4). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Ivana Perez (2), Kieley Ganaden (1).

EXTRA BASES, GAME 2… DOUBLES: Jessica Kim (5). TRIPLES: None. HOME RUNS: Oli Perez (1).

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Wine Country for a nonconference doubleheader at Pac West Conference foe Dominican University Tuesday (Feb. 28). First pitch is scheduled for noon.
