Otters Split Doubleheader, Series In Chico

CSUMB wins opener 9-2; falls 4-3 in nightcap

CHICO, Calif. — Maintaining the pattern that has persisted since opening day, Cal State Monterey Bay split a doubleheader Saturday at Chico State to also split the 4–game series. The Otters took the opener, 9–2, before Chico rallied to score twice in the bottom of the seventh for a 4–3 win in the nightcap.

CSUMB, which has alternated wins and losses through the first 11 games this season, is now 5–6 overall and 2–2 in CCAA play. Chico State is 7–5 and 2–2.

Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) earned the win in the opener, allowing no earned runs and six hits to improve to 3–3. Freshman Kieley Ganaden (North Salinas HS) led the offense with a double, a triple and three RBI. Oli Perez (Ceres HS) added a 2–run double to cap a 5–run Otter seventh that iced the game.

Chico took a 1–0 lead in the first, but the Otters took over in the third when Ganaden's 2–run double put the Otters on top to stay. Ganaden's RBI triple in the fourth extended the lead to 4–1 and Gasper took over from there.

The Otters appeared to be on their way to a sweep when Ivana Perez's (La Habra/Oregon State) 2–out single staked them to a 2–0 lead in the second. Chico rallied to tie the game at 2–2, but the Otters moved back on top thanks to an Ally Alcayaga (Sonoma Valley HS) sac fly in the seventh.

Chico spoiled the party, however, when 2–out singles by Kyra Gooler and Katie Oldwin made the Wildcats walk-off winners.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Oli Perez's 2–run double capped a 5–run Otter seventh to put CSUMB on top, 9–2.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Katie Oldwin's 2–out single in the bottom of the seventh gave the Wildcats the 4–3 win.

EXTRA, EXTRA… Congratulations to freshman Kieley Ganaden, who hit a 2–run double and an RBI triple in Game 1 for her first collegiate extra-base hits.

THE GIRLS WITH THE GOLDEN GUN… Sophomore catcher Ally Alcayaga continues to gun down would-be base stealers at a prolific rate. She threw out another potential thief Saturday and now has nabbed five of nine who have dared to run on her in 2023.

CASSIE WITH A K… Cassie Gasper fanned four Wildcats Saturday afternoon, moving her career total to 198. She needs two more to become the sixth pitcher in Otter history to reach 200 career strikeouts.
