Otters Split Pitching Gems To Open CCAA Play

Cassie Gasper tosses shutout, Ivana Perez homers in Chico

CHICO, Calif. — Two more strong pitching performances earned Cal State Monterey Bay a split of its CCAA opening series Friday afternoon at Chico State. Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) threw a 6–hit shutout to take the opener 1–0 before Chico scored in the bottom of the seventh to earn a 2–1 win in a thrilling nightcap.

The split leaves CSUMB at 4–5 overall while Chico State is now 6–4. Both teams are 1–1 in CCAA play.

Gasper was in control in the opener, scattering six hits while throwing her fifth complete game and first shutout of the season. She also fanned six batters against no walks.

She got all of the support she would need in the third inning when Ivana Perez (La Habra/Oregon State) led off the third inning with her first collegiate home run. Chico got runners on in the third through sixth innings, but Gasper easily pitched around them before tossing a 1–2–3 seventh inning to close the door.

Game 2 saw the Otters rally to score the tying run in the top of the seventh inning before Chico walked it off in the home half to spoil a solid outing from sophomore Kassidy Stetler (Mill Valley/Tamalpais HS). Stetler allowed just the two runs on eight hits and one walk to take the hard-luck loss.

CSUMB scored its run when Abby Alcayaga's (Sonoma Valley HS) sac fly plated pinch runner Faith Soriano (Los Angeles/Archer School for Girls) with two outs in the seventh.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cassie Gasper fanned Kyra Gooler to end the sixth inning with the potential tying run on third.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Rachel Bles singled home Hailey Seva from second with one out in the seventh.

HELLO HOME RUN… Ivana Perez's home run in the third inning of the opener was the first by an Otter this season. It broke a streak of 11 consecutive regular season games without a long ball by the Otters.

GASPER FOR THE WIN… The victory by Cassie Gasper in Friday's opener at Chico State was her 16th as an Otter, tying her with Celeste Villagrana (2018–19) for No. 9 on the Otter career wins list. She needs three more to tie Angela Cabral (2008) for the No. 8 spot.

CASSIE WITH A K… Cassie Gasper fanned six Wildcats Friday afternoon, moving her career total to 194. She needs six more to become the sixth pitcher in Otter history to reach 200 career strikeouts.
