Nelson’s Career Night Leads Otters To Huge Win

Jailen Nelson scores career-high 27 in 82-66 win at Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. — Sophomore guard Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) exploded for a career–high 27 points and added a game–high 10 rebounds to lead Cal State Monterey Bya to a huge 82–66 win over Stanislaus State Thursday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.

With the win, CSUMB (10–13, 8–10 CCAA) moved into sole possession of sixth place in the CCAA race with four games remaining. Thge loss was a body blow for Stanislaus, which absorbed a season sweep at the hands of the Otters while falling to 7–12 in CCAA play.

Nelson was a one–man wrecking crew Thursday night, completing his second collegiate double–double.. He scored 17 of his game–high total in the first half to as the Otters raced to a 42–28 lead at the break. The CSUMB lead grew to as many as 21 in the second before a serious Stanislaus challenge cut the deficit to eight midway through the period.

But big buckets from Nelson and Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia) and a couple of clutch 3–pointers by Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) ended the run kept the Otter lead in double digits for the final 10 minutes.

In addition to Nelson, Frankland chipped in 17 points and Wall scored 15 to lead the Otter offense. Freshman Charles Johnston (Sydney, NSW, Austrtalia) approached his third double–double, finishing with eight points and eight rebounds.

 

THE GAME WAS STATISICALLY OVER WHEN… Joe Wall kn ocked down a 3–pointer to extend the Otter lead to 71–54 with 3:27 remaining.

CAREER–NIGHT FOR NELSON… Jailen Nelson's 27–point outburst Thursday at Stanislaus State broke his career high of 23 points scored at San Francisco State on Dec. 31.

DOUBLE–DOUBLE TROUBLE… With 27 points and 10 rebounds Thursday night at Stanislaus State, Jailen Nelson recorded his second double–double of the season. He ties Charles Johnston for the team lead. It was the sixth double–double by an Otter this season.

MOVIN' ON UP… With 17 points Thursday at Stanislaus State, Levi Frankland vaulted up to No. 21 on the Otter single–season scoring list with 383 points. H needs seven points to pass Alex Fertig (2013) for 20th place.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… Another big CCAA test awaits when they Otters head up Highway 99 to battle Chico State Saturday (Feb. 18). Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
