Opportunity Slips Away In Loss At Chico

CSUMB falls 73-57 in effort to sweep Wildcats

SCHICO, Calif. — Early foul trouble put Cal State Monterey Bay behind the eight ball and Chico State took full advantage to earn a 73–57 win Saturday night in Acker Gym.

Both teams remain very much alive in the race for a CCAA Tournament bid, with Chico (9–11 CCAA) now holding a one-half game lead on CSUMB (8–11) entering the final week of the regular season. The teams split the season series with each successfully defending their home courts.

Otter center Charles Johnston (Sydney, NSW, Australia) picked up two fouls before the game was a minute old. Point guard Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) earned three fouls in the first half, making the already thin CSUMB bench positively threadbare. Nevertheless, the Otters kept thing close through halftime.

But the Wildcats turned up the heat after intermission, beginning the second half with an 17–4 run that opened a 23-point lead. The Otters never again got closer than the 16-point final margin.

J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) led CSUMB with 13 points while Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia) chipped in 11. Freshman Damjan Agovic (Carmichael/Del Campo HS) added a team season–high 15 rebounds.

CSUMB will close the regular season with three home games next week, beginning with the continuation of a game against Cal State San Bernardino on Monday (Feb. 20) at 1 p.m. The game was halted with just over a minute remaining in the first half and San Bernardino leading 42–36.
