Otters Split Again In Two Close Games At Biola

CSUMB takes opener 3-1 in eight innings, falls 4-3 in nightcap

LA MIRADA, Calif. — A strong pitching performance from Cassie Gasper (Merced/Univ. of Missouri) and some clutch extra-innings hitting lifted Cal State Monterey Bay to a split at Biola University Saturday at Freedom Field. The Otters took the opener 3–1 in eight innings before the host Eagles rode a 4–run second inning to a 4–3 win in the nightcap.

Gasper, who took three tough decisions to open the season, picked up her first win of 2023 by scattering seven hits over eight innings. She lowered her ERA to 1.67 and her WHIP to 0.96 with the effort.

Haylee Clay (Whittier/Univ. of Hawaii) and freshman Jessica Kim (La Habra/Sunny Hills HS) broke a 1–1 tie with RBI singles in the eighth. Kim opened the Otter ledger with an RBI knock in the second before a run-scoring ground out allowed Biola to tie it in the sixth.

A sweep appeared to be in order when Ally Alcayaga's (Sonoma Valley HS) run-scoring ground ball staked the Otters to a 1–0 lead in the opening frame of Game 2. They doubled their advantage when Abby Alcayaga's (Sonoma Valley HS) line drive single went under the glove of rightfielder Raylene Roybal, allowing Alcayaga to race all the way home.

But Biola answered with its only four runs of the game on a 2–run single by Alexis Lara and a 2–run double by Colby McClinton in the home half of the second.

CSUMB got one back in the sixth on an RBI double from Abby Alcayaga, but that's as close as the Otters would get.
 

GAME 1 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… Cassie Gasper got Abie Nowak, representing the tying run, to line softly to right to end the game.

GAME 2 WAS OVER WHEN OVER WHEN… the Otters couldn't get Abby Alcayaga home from second after she doubled to get them within one in the sixth inning. She proved to be CSUMB's final base runner.

DOING THE SPLITS… The Otters have achieved their 3–4 record by winning every other game so far this season.

DOUBLE THE FUN… With a pair of doubles Saturday at Biola University, Ally Alcayaga moved up to No. 12 on the Otter career doubles list with 21. That mark is all the more remarkable considering she is just seven games into her sophomore season.

NOT IN A GIVING MOOD… Cassie Gasper lowered her career ERA to 1.99 in Saturday's win over Biola University. She is looking to become the only Otter to play two or more seasons and finish with an ERA under 2.00.
