#25 Otters Battle Until Final Pitch in Series Finale Against #4 Point Loma

Otters bring winning run to the plate in the ninth, fall 9-6

SEASIDE, CALIF. – 25th ranked Cal State Monterey Baseball kept things interesting until the final pitch, but eventually fell in their series finale with fourth ranked Point Loma 9-6 on Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex.

The Otters found themselves in an early 6-0 hole, but chipped away at the deficit, bringing the score to 9-4 midway through the ninth. Drew Williams (Hollister/Cabrillo College) laced an RBI double down the left field line to get the ball rolling in the final frame, while Dominic Felice (Hollister/MPC) drew a bases loaded walk to bring the winning run to the plate. The Sea Lions buckled down however, and retired the final batter to earn the series sweep.

Nick Maestas (Pleasanton/Chabot College) had a breakout game in his first start as an Otter, going 2-4 with a double and three RBI. Drew Williams continued his hot streak with his fourth multi-hit ballgame in seven tries.

The Otters received one of their better bullpen pitching performances of the season, as the trio of Mitchell Torres (Santa Clarita/Mesa CC), Cade Balma (Danville/Holy Names Univ.) and Tim Rhyan (Sacramento/Sacramento CC) combined to allow just three runs on five hits over 4.1 innings.

Game two of today's scheduled doubleheader was canceled due to heavy rain.

THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN… Cole Hillier earned the strikeout to end the game with the bases full of Otters.

NEW MAN AT THE TOP… After a streaky start as a pinch hitter, Coach Walt White opted to give Nick Maestas his first start, batting him in the leadoff role. Maestas rewarded Coach White with a 2-4 performance at the plate, driving in three of the Otters six runs. Maestas now boasts a .667 batting average with three runs driven in.

PLATE DISCIPLINE… The Otters worked a season-high nine walks in today's contest, led by Dominic Felice, who came off the bench to work four free passes. The Otters five times worked at least nine walks in a game last season, going 5-0 in those instances.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters open conference play on the road in two weeks at Stanislaus State. The four game series will begin Friday, Feb. 24 with a first pitch scheduled for 6 PM.
