Otters Can’t Sustain Strong Start Against Gators

SFSU pulls away for 29-27, 25-15, 25-18 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team got off to a strong start against CCAA contender San Francisco State, but couldn't sustain its early momentum in a 29–27, 25–14, 25–18 Gator win Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

Senior Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin, Whitney HS) had a strong night in the penultimate home match of her collegiate career, leading the Otters with 12 kills. Senior middle blocker Kea Veenendaal (Boulder, Colo./Fairview HS) hit .417 with a team–high three blocks. Sophomore libero Dani Smith (Cave Creek, Ariz./Cactus Shadow HS) led the back row with 13 digs.

CSUMB had upset on its mind when it saved one match point then earned two of its own in the first set. But an Aiden Goodrich kill followed by a pair of Otter errors allowed SFSU to dodge that bullet.

The match remained close until midway through the second set, when the Gators used a 10–2 run to turn a 10–9 lead into a 20–11 advantage. SFSU scored the first three points of the third set and the Otters never held the lead again.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a quartet of Gators had a hand in a 10–2 run to gave SFSU a 20–11 lead in what had been a tight second set. CSUMB never held a lead in the match after that.

HONBERGER PASSES 800 KILLS… Senior outside hitter Kaylie Honberger became the sixth player in CSUMB history to pass 800 career kills Friday night when her 12 kills against San Francisco State brought her total to 811.

VEENENDAAL PASSES JOHNSON, TIES FALL… Kea Veenendaal moved up on two career blocking lists with three blocks Friday versus San Francisco State. She passed Janai Johnson (2012–14) for No. 15 with 122 career block assists. She also tied Rheann Fall (2008–11) for No. 21 in total blocks with 134.

SO LONG, FAREWELL, AUF WIEDERSEHEN, ADIEU… Saturday night will mark the final home matches for five Otters, each of whom have been significant contributors during their time in The Kelp Bed: Kaylie Honberger, Savanna Maker, Kaila Uota, Ashley Vanderpan and Kea Veenendaal. Senior Day ceremonies for the quintet will begin at 4:49 p.m.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Kaylie Honberger 13.5; KILLS: Kaylie Honberger 12; BLOCKS: Kea Veenendaal 3; ACES: Ashley Vanderpan 2; DIGS: Dani Smith 13.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude the home portion of their 2023 schedule when they host No. 7 Cal State San Bernardino Saturday. First serve will be approximately 5:15 p.m. following Senior Day ceremonies.
