Otters Set Records In Rout Of Pioneers

Otters knock down 16 treys in 102-41 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team gave itself plenty to be thankful for by feasting on Pacific Union College to the tune of a 102–41 pre-Thanksgiving victory Monday night in The Kelp Bed.

The 102 points were the most scored by the Otters since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2004 while the 61-point margin of victory also set a school record. All 12 Otters in uniform Monday scored while 11 claimed at least one rebound and 11 claimed at least one assist.

CSUMB put this one away early, opening the game with a 31–3 run. By halftime, the only question remaining was whether or not the Otters would break the century mark. Peyton Akins (Tacoma, Wash./Curtis HS) answered that question with her first collegiate 3–pointer to account for the points that put them over the top.

Ciarah Michalik (Sonoma/Santa Rosa JC) led four Otters in double figures with 14 points. Freshman Ledjan Pahukoa (Maui/Lahainaluna HS) reached double figures for the first time at the collegiate level with 13 points. Juniors Camille Sroufe (Oceanside/Palomar College) and Sha'nece Garrett (Sonora HS/Merced College) chipped in 11 points apiece..

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Ciarah Michalik made a driving layup to give the Otters a 56–15 lead with 1:19 remaining in the second quarter.

THE CENTURY CLUB… As mentioned earlier, the 102 points were the most scored by the Otters since moving to the NCAA level in 2004. The previous high as an NCAA member was 98 points in  98–70 win over Dixie State on Nov. 9, 2013. Their all-time high is 103 points in a 103–22 win over Pacific Union at the NAIA level on Dec. 14, 2002.

LARGE MARGINS… The 61-point final margin in Monday's 102–41 win over Pacific Union nearly doubled the program record for largest margin of victory at the NCAA level. The previous high was 33 points in a 78–45 win at Sonoma State on Nov. 30, 2012.

FROM WAY DOWNTOWN… The Otters smashed the school record for 3-point field goals by making 16 in Monday's 102–41 win over Pacific Union. The previous record of 13 was set twice, most recently at Dominican University on Nov. 29, 2016.

ON THE REBOUND… Although they didn't set a record for most rebounds, the Otters did collect 50 rebounds in a game for the 17th time in program history and the first since they pulled down 50 in a win over Notre Dame de Namur on Nov. 16, 2016.

LENDING A HAND… The Otters passed 26 assists in Monday's 102–41 win over Pacific Union, the second-most assists in program history. The record of 27 came against William Jessup University on Dec. 13, 2008.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Ciarah Michalik 14; REBOUNDS: Abbey Hadsell 6; ASSISTS: Amelia Smith 5; BLOCKS: Abbey Hadsell/Gabby Kime 2; STEALS: Five Otters 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters open CCAA play by hosting San Francisco State Thursday (Nov. 30). Tip-off will be at 5:30 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
