Otters Tie Win Record To End Regular Season

4-2 win at S.F. State is CSUMB's 11th of 2023

SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 25 Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team ended the regular season by tying the program record for NCAA Division II wins with a 4–2 victory over San Francisco State Thursday at Cox Stadium.

CSUMB (11–3–4, 7–2–2 CCAA) heads to the California Collegiate Athletic Association tournament as the No. 3 seed and will host sixth seeded Cal State San Bernardino (7–6–4, 4–5–2) in the opening round Sunday at 1 p.m.

The Otters jumped on top early Thursday as it took Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) less than a minute to find the back of the net.

But the Gators equalized late in the half when an Otter defender slipped in the box, allowing Johan Duenas a shot from point-blank range. Otter keeper Jack Blickenstaff (Fresno/Bullard HS) made the first stop, but Issay Bravo was there to poke home the rebound.

Less than three minutes after the interval, the Otters earned a penalty and Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC) converted from the spot to put CSUMB back on top. Alexis Sanchez (Soledad HS) volleyed home a goalkeeper clearance from outside the box in the 75th minute to double the Otter lead. Kane Ritchie (Philadelphia/St. Joseph's Prep) closed the CSUMB scoreline six minutes later when he tapped home a perfect Luis Escalante (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College)

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… an Alexis Sanchez laser from outside the area extended the Otter lead to 3–1 in the 75th minute.

POSTSEASON BOUND… The Otters are headed to the postseason for the second consecutive season when they host Cal State San Bernardino Sunday (Nov. 5) for a 1 p.m. kickoff. CSUMB defeated the Coyotes 1–0 in Cardinale Stadium on Oct. 20.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? The winner of Sunday's match versus San Bernardino will advance to the CCAA Tournament semifinals Nov. 10 in Arcata (hosted by Cal Poly Humboldt). The CCAA Championship Match will be Sunday, Nov. 12 in Arcata.

SEVEN COME 11… The Otters ended the regular season with the best record (11–3–4) and best conference record (7–2–2) in program history. The 11 wins tied the record for the most NCAA wins in programs history (they were 11–5–2 in 2013).

ONE MORE FOR THE RECORD… The all–time Otter record for wins is 12 (12–7–2) set when the team still competed at the NAIA level in 2002.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Mason Ward (4), Roberto Banegas (3), Alexis Sanchez (1), Kane Ritchie (6); ASSISTS: Janos Kömmerling (5), Francisco Ponce (1), Luis Escalante (1); SHOTS: Five Otters 2; SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 6.

THE LAST WORD… "We were very disappointed with the first half performance. We scored a great goal in the first minute from Mason Ward then just did not look like ourselves. We sat off them and conceded to go 1–1 at the half. To be fair to the guys, we responded really well and looked much more like ourselves in the second half. We got after them and created some good chances with a quality strike from Alexis Sanchez. The guys are looking forward to playing at home in the postseason with a tough game against San Bernardino in the conference tournament." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters open postseason play by hosting Cal State San Bernardino Sunday (Nov. 5) in the opening round of the CCAA Championship Tournament. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m. in Cardinale Stadium.
