Ritchie’s Strike Lifts Otters Over Yotes

Otters head to CCAA semifinals with 1-0 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay made history in more ways than one Sunday when Kane Ritchie's (Philadelphia/St. Joseph's Prep) late strike earned the Otters a trip to the CCAA Men's Soccer tournament Final Four with a 1–0 victory over Cal State San Bernardino in Cardinale Stadium.

CSUMB (12–3–4, No. 25 NCAA Division II) advances to meet No. 5 Cal Poly Pomona (12–1–4) in Friday's CCAA Tournament semifinal round. It's the first time the Otters have advanced this far since becoming a full CCAA member in 2007. It also marked CSUMB's first postseason victory since its days as an NAIA member back in 2003.

Ritchie's goal — his fifth in the last four games — capped an impressive second half that saw the Otters take control of the match. The play began with a darting run into the box by Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS), who found Ritchie alone just atop the 6–yard box. Ritchie chested Guerrero's cross down to his left foot, then tucked his seventh of the season just inside the far post.

San Bernardino started well, applying pressure early with a strong counter attack on top of a composed defensive effort. Junior forward Nicklaus Sullivan proved to be a handful all match long, and created the first chance of the day when he broke in alone only to fire wide from the top of the box in the 11th minute.

Sullivan had one more opportunity to create havoc, using his outstanding pace to create another one-on-one with Otter keeper Jack Blickenstaff (Fresno/Bullard HS) in the 83rd minute. But Blickenstaff won the battle, ranging out to the penalty spot to stone Sullivan and keep CSUMB in front.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jack Blickenstaff made a brilliant 1v1 save on Nicklaus Sullivan in the 83rd minute to deny the final shot on goal by the Coyotes.

WHERE NO OTTER HAS GONE BEFORE… The Otters won a postseason soccer match for the first time at the NCAA level with Sunday's 1–0 CCAA Tournament victory over Cal State San Bernardino. The last time CSUMB won a postseason match came at the NAIA level in 2003 when the Otter defeated Menlo College 2–0 in the opening round of the Cal-Pac Conference Tournament.

AN NCAA DOZEN… Already assured of finishing with the best record in program history, the Otters made history again by earning their 12th victory of 2023 (12–3–4). The 12 wins are their most at the NCAA level and equal the all–time program record of 12 (12–7–2) set at the NAIA level by the 2002 club.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Kane Ritchie (7); ASSISTS: Miguel Guerrero (5); SHOTS: Miguel Guerrero/Julian Lomeli 2; SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 4.

THE LAST WORD… "We had a disappointing first half and didn't play like ourselves, similar to last week's game against S.F. State. We knew CSUSB was  going to be a very tough game and they could have been up by two goals in the first half. After the break, we looked much more like ourselves and created some really good opportunities and scored a really good goal from Kane after a great run by Miggy to get the ball in the box. We are excited to move forward into the semifinal of the conference tournament against a very good Pomona side." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Humboldt for the CCAA Tournament semifinals Friday (Nov. 10) against No. 5 ranked Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. The winner of that match will play for the CCAA Tournament title and an automatic berth in the NCAA Tournament on Sunday (Nov. 12).
