Otters Fall To Dominican At the Buzzer, 74-72

Charles Johnston has another huge night with 20 points, 17 rebounds

HAYWARD, Calif. — Another huge game for sophomore Charles Johnston (Sydney, NSW, Australia) wasn't quite enough to save Cal State Monterey Bay from a last-second shot as Dominican University pulled out a 74–72 win at the Pioneer Conference Challenge Saturday in Pioneer Gym on the campus of Cal State East Bay.

Johnston went for 20 points and 17 rebounds — one week after torching Western Oregon for 20 and 21 — in a contest so close it featured 13 ties and 12 lead changes. It was Dominican that claimed the last lead, however, when Dale Currie's off-balance shot from the free-throw line through a sea of Otter hands bounced home in the final second of regulation.

Although CSUMB played with the lead for four minutes more than Dominican Saturday night, the Otters had to rally from eight down in the final 3:21 to give themselves a chance. A pair of Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) free throws tied the game at 70–70 with 41 seconds remaining. After a Currie layup put the Penguins back on top, 72–70, Ameere Britton (Elk Grove HS) tied the game once again with a floater in the paint and 18 seconds to play.

In addition to Johnston, Britton scored a season–high 13 points and Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) scored 12. Freshman Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) passed four assists.

CSUMB will play its first home game of the season Friday (Nov. 24) when the Nanooks of the University of Alaska visit The Kelp Bed for a 3 p.m. tip.
