Otters Start Hot, Defeat Alaska 83–64

CSUMB leads by double digits for final 34 minutes

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team started hot and held visiting Alaska at arm's length throughout to earn an 83–64 win over the Nanooks Friday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

It took CSUMB fewer than six minutes to open a double–digit lead at 17–5. Alaska never pulled within single digits over the final 34 minutes.

A late Joe Wall (Portland, Ore./Jesuit HS) 3-pointer brought the Otter lead to 44–22 at the half. The advantage stayed between 15 and 22 points over the entire second half.

Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) posted his third 20–point game in five outings this season by leading all scorers with 21 points. Freshman Jaden Tengan (Sacramento/Santa Clarita Christian) added 16 points while sophomore Charles Johnston scored 14 with a team–high six rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the Bill James safe lead formula, the game was statistically over when Jackson Corley pulled down the rebound from a missed Alaska 3-pointer with 2:18 remaining and the Otters leading 76–61.

FOR (HOME) OPENERS: With Friday's 83–64 win over Alaska, the Otters now are 14–11 all–time when playing their first Kelp Bed game of the season. They are 11–7 in home openers since joining the NCAA for the 2004–05 season.

WE LOVE THE 80s…The 80s have incredibly friendly territory for the Otters. With Friday's 83–64 win over Alaska, CSUMB now owns a 60–12 (.833) mark in its last 72 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation games dating to the 2007–08 season.

THE NELSON 500: Last weekend, Jailen Nelson became the 28th player in Otter history to surpass 500 career points. With 21 points in Friday's win over Alaska, he moved past Charlie Tooley (2019–20) for No. 23 with 565. He need 20 more to pass Koen Sapwell (2018–20) for No. 22.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jailen Nelson 21; REBOUNDS: Charles Johnston 6; ASSISTS: Ameere Britton/Jailen Nelson 3; BLOCKS: Jaden Tengan 1; STEALS: Joe Wall 3.

THE LAST WORD… "You know, we have had great starts in all five of our games this season. Unfortunately, in the previous four games we were unable to sustain it long enough to have the results we'd like. Tonight, was different. The entire first half and a few good spurts in the second were great. I'm really hopeful that we can continue to build on this as the season goes along. I'm very proud of there effort and energy all night." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–game homestand by hosting when they open CCAA play against San Francisco State Thursday (Nov. 30) in The Kelp Bed. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
