Two Vicious Strikes Lift Otters Over Jacks

Bedolla, Virga add to highlight reel in 2-1 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — A pair of absolutely filthy first half goals by Alan Bedolla (Pajaro Valley HS/Hartnell College) and Nico Virga (Sacramento/Jesuit HS) put No. 15 Cal State Monterey Bay back in the win column in a 2–1 victory over Cal Poly Humboldt Sunday in Cardinale Stadium.

Both goals were highlight reel worthy in different ways. The first goal finished a lightning quick counter that saw Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC) flick Mason Ward's (Temecula Valley HS) pinpoint cross to the feet of Bedolla, who roofed his shot to the near post vee for his fourth goal of the season in the 30th minute.

Virga's strike was nothing less than venomous. He dribbled to within 30 yards of goal and then unleashed a laser to the far post that gave Humboldt goalkeeper Adrian Gallardo no chance.

Despite being out-shot 17–4, Humboldt found its way back into the match when James Hayes's shot from just outside the box was deflected in off a failed attempt to clear in the 70th minute. It made for a nervous final 20 minutes, but the Otters defense did not allow a shot in the final 16 minutes to secure all three points.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Humboldt's Ryan Rutherford put the final Lumberjack attempt over the bar in the 76th minute.

A DEUCE FOR A W… Two seams to be the magic number for the Otter offense at home. The Otters have not lost a home match when scoring two or more goals since Sept. 12, 2015. CSUMB is 25–0–1 when scoring two or more goals at home since that date.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… With his first half strike in Sunday's 2–1 win over Cal Poly Humboldt, Nico Virga became the 11th different Otter to score through 11 games this season. Since moving to the NCAA in 2004, only the 2011 Otters (with 12) have employed more goal scorers.

AN EIGHT–HEADED MONSTER… Everybody getting into the offensive act for the Otters must make it difficult for defenses to know who to target. Eight of the 11 Otter goals scorers have scored at least twice this season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Alan Bedolla (4), Nico Virga (1); ASSISTS: Mason Ward (3), Roberto Banegas (3), Nathan Padilla (1); SHOTS: Alan Bedolla/Julian Lomeli 4; SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3–match homestand by hosting Cal State San Marcos Thursday (Oct. 12). Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
