Otters Blank San Marcos 4–0, Back In First

Romero scores twice, Bedolla, Kömmerling add goals

SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 23 Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team was brilliant early and late in Thursday night's meeting with Cal State San Marcos, and that was enough to vault the Otters back into first place with a 4–0 win in Cardinal Stadium.

CSUMB scored twice before the dust had settled from the opening kickoff. Javier Romero (San Francisco/Marshall HS) opened the Otter ledger by finishing a perfect short corner set piece from Janos Kömmerling and Hugo Vargas-Rios (Pajaro Valley HS/Cabrillo College) in the fifth minute. Barely a minute later, Kömmerling converted from the spot after a handball in the box by the Cougars to double the Otter lead.

As the match wore on, San Marcos became the more dangerous side for a spell and seam destined to score for the better part of an hour. The Cougars's best chance to pull one back came on the hour mark when Riley Patterson rang one off the post that skipped all the way across the goalmouth before spinning out for an Otter goal kick.

CSUMB continued to absorb pressure until late, when Alan Bedolla (Pajaro Valley HS/Hartnell College) flicked a long outlet from goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff (Fresno/Bullard HS) between a pair of San Marcos defenders, creating a 1v1 for Romero, who slotted the ball under a charging Jesus Mentado to quell the Cougar uprising in the 87th minute.

A half minute later, the Otters closed the scoreline with a miracle goal one had to see to believe. Senior Garrett Hayes (El Toro HS/Irvine Valley College) took a speculative shot from beyond midfield. The ball bounced in the goal mouth then off the bottom of the crossbar. Before Mentado could find the rebound, Bedolla pounced on it for his fifth goal of 2023.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Javier Romero beat CSUSM keeper Jesus Mentado 1v1 in the 87th minute to increase the Otter lead to 3–0.

BACK ON TOP… With Cal State L.A. beating Cal Poly Pomona 1–0 Thursday night in Pomona, the Otters returned to the top of the CCAA table with 12 points. The Otters are tied with L.A. but hold the tie-breaker based on their 2–0 win over the Golden Eagles earlier this month.

KÖMMERLING FROM THE SPOT… Janos Kömmerling converted his third penalty of 2023 in Thursday's 4–0 win over Cal State San Marcos. He joins Nate Torricelli, who made a CSUMB-record five spot kicks in 2009, as the only players in Otter history to accomplish that feat.

A DEUCE FOR A W… With Thursday's 4–0 win over Cal State San Marcos, the Otters ran their unbeaten streak when scoring two are more goals at home to 27 matches. Since 2015, CSUMB is 26–0–1 at home when scoring at least two goals.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Javier Romero 2 (4,5), Janos Kömmerling (3), Alan Bedolla (5); ASSISTS: Hugo Vargas-Rios (1), Janos Kömmerling (3), Alan Bedolla (2), Garrett Hayes (1); SHOTS: Javier Romero 3; SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 4.

THE LAST WORD… "We felt like we could have played our best soccer of the season in the first ten minutes. The guys were pressing, working hard moving the ball very well and scored two great goals and created some other great opportunities. We knew that a tough San Marcos team would come back well, and they responded well, but I thought we defended really well, blocking shots and playing tough. The second half was not our best with the ball but we worked very hard and defended well without the ball and scored two good late goals. The guys are excited about a tough game on the road at East Bay." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the East Bay area to take on Cal State East Bay Sunday. The men will kickoff at 11:30 a.m. as the opening match of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
