Otters Dominate In Scoreless Draw At East Bay

Alan Bedolla’s point-blank attempt stopped at final whistle

HAYWARD, Calif. — A dominant performance by the No. 23 Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team netted the Otters a single point in the California Collegiate Athletic Association title chase as CSUMB played to a scoreless draw with Cal State East Bay Sunday at Pioneer Stadium.

CSUMB (8–2–3, 4–1–1 CCAA) could end the day anywhere from first to third on the conference table depending on results of Sunday's late games.

The Otters settled for a share of the spoils despite out-shooting a game East Bay (7–4–2, 2–3–1) side 16–3 for the match. Only six ball found the target Sunday and all six of those belonged to the Otters, Pioneer goalkeeper Adan Corona made six stops to earn his team a point.

The CSUMB defense kept Jack Blickenstaff (Fresno/Bullard HS) clean as the sophomore did not have to make a save for his second shutout.

The Otters created a plethora a scoring chances but couldn't get good leather on the ball consistently. Nevertheless, they fought to the final whistle when Alan Bedolla (Pajaro Valley HS/Hartnell College) got a dangerous shot off as time expired, only to see Corona make one last save to preserve the draw.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… East Bay keeper Adan Corona stopped Alan Bedolla's close range attempt at the final whistle.

FOR NAUGHTS… Saturday at Cal State East Bay, the Otters played to their first scoreless since the NCAA eliminated overtime at the start of the 2022 season. CSUMB's last scoreless draw came at Cal State San Bernardino on Oct. 31, 2021.

OTTERS ARE WINNERS AGAIN… Sunday's 0–0 draw at East Bay assures the Otters a winning record to close the regular season for the fourth consecutive season under Head Coach Graeme Jaap, who is now 30–19–12 at CSUMB, the top winning percentage in program history. For what it's worth, prior to Jaap's arrival, the Otters finished at or above .500 just four total times since joining the NCAA in 2004.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: None; ASSISTS: None; SHOTS: Janos Kömmerling 4; SAVES: None.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to Seaside to host their final regular season home games at Cardinale Stadium Oct. 20 and 22. The weekend begins Friday when Cal State San Bernardino visits for a doubleheader, with the men kicking off at 7 p.m.
