Kömmerling Strike Lifts Otters Over Yotes

Janos Kömmerling’s fifth of the season is enough in 1-0 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — A Janos Kömmerling strike from outside the box sure to make the Cal State Monterey Bay season highlight reel was enough to give all three points to the Otters, who held off a game Cal State San Bernardino side for a 1–0 win Friday night in Cardinale Stadium.

The win helped the No. 22 ranked Otters (9–2–3, 5–1–1 CCAA) keep pace with first place Cal State L.A. in the California Collegiate Athletic Association race. CSUMB remains two points behind the Golden Eagles with four matches remaining.

San Bernardino (5–5–3, 2–4–1) dropped three points out of the playoff zone with Friday's defeat.

Both teams shared the run of play Friday, but it was the Coyote defense that broke first. Just before the hour mark Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC) won the ball on the far right edge of the San Bernardino penalty area. He found Kömmerling open above the box and fed him a perfect feed that Kömmerling deposited into the upper right corner of the Coyote goal for his fifth of the season.

CSUMB kept the pressure on for much of the second half, but the Coyotes remained dangerous on the counter, although most of their forays into the Otter defensive third ended in shots from distance or crosses that couldn't quite connect.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Travis Babineau's free kick from 22 yards out rang off the crossbar in the 88th minute. Although San Bernardino kept pressing, it proved to be the Coyotes' last best chance to equalize.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff (Fresno/Bullard HS) earned his fourth clean sheet of the season with Friday's 1–0 win over Cal State San Bernardino. He ties Brendan Baca (2007, '09) and Evan Drake (2013) for No. 3 on the Otter single–season shutout list.

SCORELESS STREAK CONTINUES… With Friday's 1–0 win over Cal State San Bernardino, the Otter defense has pitched three consecutive shutouts. The Otters have not allowed a goal in 290:59 dating back to Oct. 8.

HIGH FIVES… With his match–winner Friday versus Cal State San Bernardino, Janos Kömmerling joined Alan Bedolla and Javier Romero as Otters to score five goals in 2023. It marks just the second time in program history—and the first since 2007— that three or more Otters scored at least five goals in the same season. In 2007, Nate Torricelli (8), Andrew Burkhammer (7), Kyle Millerick (5) and Kyle Satow (5) all turned the trick.

BATTLE OF THE BEASTS… When the No. 22 Otters host No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona Sunday in Cardinale Stadium, it will mark the first time a ranked CSUMB side has played an opponent who also was nationally–ranked.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Janos Kömmerling (5); ASSISTS: Roberto Banegas (4); SHOTS: Alan Bedolla/Janos Kömmerling/Nathan Padilla 2; SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 3.

THE LAST WORD… "We knew coming in that it would be a very tough game and it proved to be just that. We never really got going in the first half, but defended really well and had great desire to block shots. The guys reacted much better in the second half and came out looking more like ourselves, resulting in a great goal by Janos. We had two big defensive performances from Alexis and Nico, who were brilliant for 90 minutes. The guys are looking forward to playing against number 12 in the country on Sunday." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters close the home portion of their regular season schedule by hosting No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona Sunday. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. as the second match of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
