Late Goal Seals 3–1 win For Pomona

Janos Kömmerling scores sixth goal for Otters

SEASIDE, Calif. — The No. 22 Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer nearly battled back from an early 2–0 deficit before an 80th minute counter by No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona secured the spoils for the visitor's in a 3–1 Bronco win Sunday in Cardinale Stadium.

The win lifts Pomona (9–1–4, 5–1–2 CCAA) one point above CSUMB (9–3–3, 5–2–1) in the CCAA standings with three matches remaining. Cal State L.A., a 3–2 winner over Stanislaus State Sunday, remains four points clear atop the table.

Pomona scored against the run of play early when the Otter defense failed to clear a long throw by Melvyn Perez Cortez in 14th minute. Fin Jackson snuck in the back door and poked garbage home from two yards out.

The Broncos doubled their advantage on the half hour when Jasper Winslow carried another long throw by Perez Cortez from the center circle to about 35 yards from goal before unleashing a punishing shot that gave Otter goalkeeper Jack Blickenstaff no chance.

The Otters came out hunting in the second half and Janos Kömmerling pulled one back 10 minutes after the restart when he hammered a ball from the left wing through the hands of Pomona keeper CJ Walker. But Walker played big down the stretch, twice denying quality chances by Hugo Vargas-Rios (Pajaro Valley HS/Cabrillo College) to keep the Broncos ahead.

The Broncos finally put the game on ice on a quick counter that featured a strong run and even better pass by Paul Roger Henschke to set up Cesar Ruvalcaba in the 80th minute.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Cesar Ruvalcaba scored on the counter in the 80th minute to give Pomona a 3–1 lead.

BATTLE OF THE BEASTS… Sunday's meeting between No. 22 CSUMB and No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona marked the first match between two nationally ranked opponents in Seaside.

KÖMMERLING TAKES GOAL–SCORING LEAD… Janos Kömmerling scored his sixth goal of 2023 Sunday versus Cal Poly Pomona, moving him to the top of the Otter scoring ledger. Alan Bedolla and Javier Romero both have five goals.

THREE IS A RARE NUMBER… The Otters yielded three goals in a match for the first time this season Sunday versus Cal Poly Pomona. It's just the second time the Otters have allowed three goals in a regular season game at home since Graeme Jaap became head coach in 2019.

SUNDAY WAS SENIOR DAY… The Otters held pregame ceremonies for eight seniors who played their final regular season home matches in Cardinle Stadium: Matthias Milton, Garrett Hayes, Roberto Banegas, Miguel Guerrero, Luis Escalante, George Aquino, Javier Romero and Jose Madrigal. Note that several of those players have remaining eligibility due to COVID in 2020 but will be graduating this spring.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Janos Kömmerling (6); ASSISTS: Alexis Sanchez (4); SHOTS: Hugo Vargas-Rios 5; SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 3, Matthias Milton 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their final three regular season matches of 2023. The trip begins Friday (Oct. 27) with a visit to Stanislaus State. Kickoff will be at 7 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
