Otters Clinch CCAA Bid With Win At Stanislaus

Kane Ritchie’s brace leads 3-1 victory

TURLOCK, Calif. — A brace from Kane Ritchie (Philadelphia/St. Joseph's Prep) led No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay to a 3–1 win over upset-minded Stanislaus State Friday night at Warrior Stadium, clinching the Otters' second consecutive CCAA Tournament berth.

CSUMB (10–3–3, 6–2–1 CCAA) joins Cal State L.A. and Cal Poly Pomona in the 6–team CCAA Tournament field with two matches remaining. All three teams are still in the mix to win the CCAA regular season title and/or claiming one of two available first round byes.

The Otters fell behind early Friday thanks to a great left-footed cross from the endline by Alexander Cuellar, who found CCAA leading scorer Tyler Tipton alone in the middle of the box for and easy finish in the 14th minute. But the Otters drew level five minutes before the interval when Miguel Guerrero (Redwood City/Sequoia HS) displayed his own deft touch with his left foot by putting a perfect cross from the endline onto Ritchie's head.

CSUMB leveled up the intensity in the second half, out-shooting Stanislaus 13–4 in the period, but seemed destined to share the spoils until a perfect free kick from Janos Kömmerling set up a tap-in header by Jose Madrigal (San Francisco/Arts & Tech HS) for an 82nd minute winner.

Ritchie delivered the final blow five minutes later when he ran on to a through ball from Madrigal (who himself turned on a nice pass from Luis Escalante (Soquel HS/Cabrillo College)), carried it 25 yards, then slipped it past Warrior keeper Robby Rosas.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Kane Ritchie completed his brace in the 87th minute to give the Otters a 3–1 lead.

OTTERS BACK IN THE POSTSEASON… For the first time since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2004, the Otters have qualified for the postseason in two consecutive years.

MORE WORK TO DO… The Otters can clinch no worse than a home playoff game with at least a tie (or a Sonoma State loss or tie) in the final two games. CSUMB is still alive for a first round bye and/or the CCAA regular season title, but will need help from other teams to accomplish one or both of those goals.

DOUBLE THE FUN… Friday's 3–1 win at Stanislaus State was the 10th of the season for CSUMB (10–3–3 overall), marking the third time the Otters have reached double-digit wins at the NCAA Division II level. CSUMB's Division II record for wins is 11 (11–5–2) in 2013. The all–time Otter record is 12 wins (12–7–2) set at the NAIA level in 2002.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Kane Ritchie 2 (3, 4), Jose Madrigal (3). ASSISTS: Miguel Guerrero (4), Janos Kömmerling (4), Jose Madrigal (2). SHOTS: Janos Kömmerling/Kane Ritchie 5. SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 1

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head north on Highway 99 to take on No. 5 Chico State Sunday in Chico. The Otters can clinch no worse than third place in the CCAA with a win or tie.
