Otters Draw at No. 5 Chico, Clinch No. 3 Seed

Kane Ritchie’s equalizer earns MB a home playoff game

CHICO, Calif. — A Kane Ritchie (Philadelphia/St. Joseph's Prep) header in the 77th minute earned the No. 21 Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team a share of the spoils and a home playoff game with a 1–1 draw at No. 5 Chico State Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.

With the point, CSUMB (10–3–4, 6–2–2 CCAA) locks up the No. 3 seed in the CCAA Tournament and a home first round match Sunday (Nov. 5) in Cardinale Stadium. It marks CSUMB's highest finish ever in the CCAA standings.

The Wildcats managed only two shots through the first 44:30, but claimed the lead just before halftime on a perfectly placed corner kick by Adrian Fontanelli that found the head of Sam Addo.

The Otters poured on the pressure after the restart, out-shooting the Chico 10–1 through the first half hour of the second half. The breakthough finally came on a slow build up that saw six Otters touch the ball before Nico Virga (Sacramento/Jesuit HS) sent a far post cross to Ritchie, who buried a powerful header from just inside the 6–yard box to level the match.

Neither keeper faced significant danger over a mostly uneventful final 16 minutes.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Chico couldn't make anything out of a free kick just past midfield with eight seconds remaining.

WHY THE No. 3 SEED? The Otters are locked into the No. 3 seed in the CCAA Tournament based on the conference tie-breaking procedures. CSUMB can tie Cal Poly Pomona for second place with an Otter win at San Francisco State and a Pomona loss at San Bernardino on Thursday, but the Broncos win the tie-break based on their win at CSUMB last week. Chico could tie the Otters for third place (with a win at Stanislaus Thursday plus an Otter loss), but CSUMB would win the tie-break based on its win over CCAA Champion Cal State L.A.

WHERE DO WE GO FROM HERE? The Otters travel to meet San Francisco State Thursday (Nov. 2) in Cox Stadium for their final regular season match. While it won't have any bearing on the standings, it could have big implications on the NCAA West Regional seedings. Following that match, the Otters likely will host either San Bernardino, San Marcos or Sonoma State Nov. 5 for the right to advance to the CCAA Final Four at Cal Poly Humboldt Nov. 10–12.

BATTLE OF THE BEASTS… Sunday's meeting between No. 21 CSUMB and No. 5 Chico State marked CSUMB's fourth meeting with a Top 20 opponent in 2023. It's the most Top 20 opponents ever faced by CSUMB in a single season. CSUMB went 1–1–2 in those games, beating (then) No. 8 Cal State L.A. 2–0, tying No. 5 Chico State and No. 20 Colorado School of Mines 1–1, and falling to No. 12 Cal Poly Pomona, 3–1.

HIGH FIVES… With his goal Sunday at Chico State, Kane Ritchie became the fourth Otter to score at least five goals in 2023. He joins Janos KömmerlingAlan Bedolla and Javier Romero in that club. It marks just the second time in program history—and the first since 2007— that three or more Otters scored at least five goals in the same season. In 2007, Nate Torricelli (8), Andrew Burkhammer (7), Kyle Millerick (5) and Kyle Satow (5) all turned the trick.

FIVE HIGH FIVES? In case you're wondering, the Otters have never had five 5–goal scorers in a single season. Still looking to join the club are Miguel Guerrero with four goals, as well as Jose Madrigal and Mason Ward, with three goals apiece.

TAKING THEIR SHOTS… The Otters peppered Chico State with 20 shots, out-shooting the Wildcats 20–7 for the match. It marked the third time this season the Otters attempted at least 20 shots in a match. CSUMB has been out-shot just twice in 17 matches and is out-shooting its opponents 278–131 for the season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Kane Ritchie (5). ASSISTS: Nico Virga (2). SHOTS: Miguel Guerrero 5. SAVES: Jack Blickenstaff 2.

THE LAST WORD… "We started the game very well and created some good chances but just didn't make the right decision in the final third. We were very disappointed to concede just before half time from a set piece and go down 1-0. We responded well in the second half and played some really good soccer and got a thoroughly deserved equalizer and kept pushing to score again. We will take four points on the road and now we get ready to play our final game of regular Thursday against a tough S.F. State team." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to The City to take on San Francisco State Thursday (Nov. 2) in their final regular season match before the CCAA Tournament begins on Nov. 5.
