SEASIDE, Calif. — Junior forward Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) recorded her second collegiate hat trick to lead Cal State Monterey Bay to its biggest win of the season Friday night as the Otters defeated Sonoma State 4–1 in Cardinale Stadium.

McManus and Natalia Leroux (Martinez/College Park HS) scored in the first half to provide all of the offense CSUMB's typically stingy defense needed. But after Ashley Fry pulled one back for Sonoma midway through the second half, McManus removed all doubt as to the match's outcome, scoring twice in less than five minutes.

McManus's hatty was just the fourth in Otter history and the first since Nayeli Sandoval Gallo put three behind Cal State Dominguez Hills in the 2022 season finale. McManus, who also scored three as a freshman in a win over Holy Names University in 2021, becomes the first player in Otter women's soccer history to record a pair of hat tricks.

The final scoreline notwithstanding, the match was played on relatively even terms. CSUMB held a narrow 13–10 edge in total shots and 4–2 advantage in corner kicks.

Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) made five saves to earn her second win of the season.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Jordyne Puentes fought on the doorstep to deliver a short pass to Amelia McManus, who finished from near the spot to give the Otters a 3–1 lead in the 78th minute.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… Natalia Leroux became the seventh different player to score a goal for the Otters in nine matches this season. Amelia McManus is the lone Otter to score more than one.

McMANUS JOINS EXCLUSIVE CLUB… With her hat trick in Friday's 4–1 win over Sonoma State, Amelia McManus earned membership in an exclusive club at CSUMB. She joins former men's Academic All–American^® Walmer Martinez as the only players in CSUMB men's or women's soccer history to post two career hat tricks.

THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST… The Otter defense continues to be a stingy lot, allowing just seven goals in the first nine matches of 2023. The Otters have not allowed more than one goal in 14 consecutive matches dating back to October of last season.
