Late Goal Sinks Otters in 1-0 Loss To Humboldt

84th minute corner provides game's only goal

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team came within six minutes of what would have been a solid draw with in-form Cal Poly Humboldt, only to see a late Lumberjack goal steal the points in a 1–0 setback Sunday at Cardinale Stadium.

Humboldt, ranked as high as No. 21 in the NCAA Division II national rankings this season, put CSUMB under pressure for most of the afternoon, but the always stingy Otter defense was able to absorb much of it in front of freshman goalkeeper Nylah Mirshafiei (Fountain Valley HS), who made her first collegiate start.

Mirshafiei acquitted herself well making 10 saves, the most ever by an Otter freshman in her debutante performance. But a scramble in the box on a late Humboldt corner proved to be the difference.

Mirshafiei made the initial save off a header from Megan Janikowski, but the mass of bodies in the mixer made it impossible for her to corral the rebound. Defender Abby Borg was the first to it and she sent it home for the winner.

The Otters conclude their 3–match homestand by hosting Cal State San Marcos Thursday (Oct. 12). Kickoff is set for 4:30 p.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
