Penalty Sinks Otters In Chico

Second half spot kick is all the scoring in 1-0 defeat

CHICO, Calif. — A penalty kick late in the second half second half proved to be all the scoring as Chico State escaped with a 1–0 women's soccer victory over Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday afternoon at University Stadium.

The teams played on pretty much equal terms for most of the match, but the pendulum swung in Chico's favor in the 67th minute when a scramble in the Otter box resulted in a spot kick for the Wildcats. CSUMB keeper Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) guessed correctly, but Natalie Mendoza tucked her shot perfectly inside the post.

The goal ended a period of consistent pressure by the Wildcats, who protected against a few final surges by the Otters to to preserve the victory. Jordyne Puentes (Fresno/Bullard HS) put CSUMB's final shot on frame in the 79th minute.

The Otters will close their 2023 campaign Thursday (Nov. 2) when they travel to The City to take on San Francisco State. Kickoff will be at 2 p.m. as the second match of doubleheader action with the Otter men.
