McManus Breaks Record, Otters Stay Alive With Tie

Amelia McManus becomes MB’s leading Division II scorer in draw at Stanislaus

TURLOCK, Calif. — Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) set the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer scoring record at the NCAA Division II level to help the Otters keep their postseason hopes alive with a 2–2 draw at Stanislaus State Friday in Warrior Stadium.

McManus finished a Tiger Rendon (Fresno/Central HS) corner kick in the 64th minute for her record 19th goal, the most by an Otter since moving to the NCAA Division II level in 2004. She had shared the record with Kristen Womack (2012–15) after scoring her 18th in Sunday's 1–0 win over Cal Poly Pomona.

The goal represented points 45 and 46 for McManus, which broke the tie with Womack in that category as well.

But McManus' record breaker served as the warmup act to a frenetic final half hour that saw two penalties awarded, a big save from Otter keeper Aubrey McKessy (Canyon Country/Canyon HS) and wtwo last-gasp attempts to steal the spoils by CSUMB.

Barely two minutes after McManus equalized, Stanislaus was awarded a penalty, only to see the Warriors' leading scorer, Alexis Brewah, fire over the bar. The Otter reprieve was short-lived, however, as 10 minutes later Aliah Avila curled a free kick off the post for Shauna Johnston to finish and put the Warriors back on top.

This, time, however, CSUMB earned a quick trip to the spot. Less than three minutes after Stanislaus retook the lead, Cory Greer (Valencia HS) served a ball into the box looking for McManus. But Stanislaus defender Zoie Wilson was called for a handball trying to collect it for a clear.

Rendon stepped up to the penalty and sent keeper Malia Allen the wrong way to tie the game in the 79th minute.

McManus and Tannin Klunis (Sebastopol/Analy HS) both had excellent chances in the box in the final five minutes, but neither could find the target.

The tie means CSUMB (3–7–5, 2–5–2 CCAA) remains alive in the California Collegiate Athletic Association race, pending the outcome of Friday's late matches. The Otters will continue their postseason quest  Sunday when they travel up Highway 99 to take on Chico State.
