Late Own Goal Sinks Otters At East Bay

Amelia McManus moves up to No. 3 on career scoring list in loss

HAYWARD, Calif. — It looked like the Cal State Monterey Bay women's soccer team had secured a valuable point in the California Collegiate Athletic Association standings before a late own goal handed the spoils to host Cal State East Bay in a 2–1 defeat Sunday at Pioneer Stadium.

East Bay scored early in the second half to break a scoreless tie. The match seemed destined to end that way before a strong turn and even stronger shot from the top of the penalty area from Amelia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) slipped in under the cross bar to level the scoreline 17 minutes from time.

Tiger Rendon (Fresno/Central HS) nearly put the Otters ahead in the 80th minute, only to be denied on a spectacular diving stop from East Bay keeper Jordan Smith. That save proved to be the tipping point.

Two minutes later, East Bay attacked down the wing and got the ball into a dangerous scoring area. The Otter defense held firm, but in the unluckiest of fortunes, freshman Annabelle Price's clearing header found its way to the back of the net, breaking the tie.

Neither side managed a shot attempt over the final seven minutes.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a tie-breaking own goal went against the Otters in the 83rd minute.

THE FIFTH OF AMELIA… Forward Amelia McManus scored her fifth goal of 2023 Sunday at Cal State East Bay. She becomes the fourth player in Otter history to score five or more goals in a season twice and just the second to do it at the NCAA Division II level (Regan Porteous 2014–15).

McMANUS PASSES PORTEOUS… With her goal Sunday at Cal State East Bay, Amelia McManus passed Regan Porteous for No. 3 on the Otter career scoring list with 42 points. Only Kristen Womack (44 from 2012–15) scored more at the NCAA Division II level. Brittani Donnachie (2002–04) set the Otter all-divisions record with 77 points, playing two seasons at the NAIA level.

AN UNUSUAL SPELL FOR THE DEFENSE… After going 15 matches without allowing more than one goal, the Otters have allowed two goals in consecutive matches (*one goal was a PK and one was an own goal). It's the first time the Otters have allowed multiple goals in consecutive games since Oct. 20–22, 2017, a span of 86 matches.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Amelia McManus (5); ASSISTS: Tiger Rendon (4); SHOTS: Tiger Rendon 3; SAVES: Aubrey McKessy 1.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to Seaside to host their final regular season home games at Cardinale Stadium Oct. 20 and 22. The weekend begins Friday when Cal State San Bernardino visits for a doubleheader, with the women kicking off at 4:30 p.m.
