San Bernardino Rallies With Two Second Half Strikes

Natalia Leroux gives Otter an early lead in 2-1 setback

SEASIDE, Calif. — Senior Natalia Leroux (Martinez/College Park HS) gave Cal State Monterey Bay an early lead, but the Otters couldn't hold on as Cal State San Bernardino scored twice in the second half to take a 2–1 decision Friday evening in Cardinale Stadium.

Leroux's second goal of the season came with the run of play as some clever tactical changes instituted by Head Coach Laura VanWart helped the Otters control much of the first half. Leroux scored after an Amerlia McManus (Las Vegas, Nev./Faith Lutheran HS) header hit square off the post. Alexandra Diaz (Brentwood/Heritage HS) fed the rebound back to Leroux, whose powerful shot to the upper right vee gave Coyote goalkeepr Leila Peregrina no chance.

But San Bernardino found its footing just after the half and equalized five minutes after the restart when Losada Lucumi finished a quick series of passes from close range. The Coyotes forged ahead on the hour when Unieque Solis stripped an Otter defender and broke in alone on goal for her fifth of the season.

Tiger Rendon (Fresno/Central HS) had one last chance to get the Otters back in it but sent CSUMB's final shot attempt over the bar in the 88th minute.

The Otters will close the home portion of their 2023 season Sunday when they host CCAA-leading Cal Poly Pomona. Kickoff will be at 11:30 a.m. as the opener of doubleheader action with the Otter men's team.
