Late Rally Falls Short Against Seawovles

Otters get within two late bit Sonoma hits free throws to win 81-76

SEASIDE, Calif. — Time ran out on a furious Cal State Monterey Bay rally fell just short in an 81–76 loss to Sonoma State Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB trailed by 12 with two minutes remaining when it got hot on both ends of the floor to pull within a single possession twice before the Seawolves made a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left to take an 80–76 lead. The Otters failed to score on the ensuing possession and a Sonoma free throw with three-tenths of a second on the clock accounted for the final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Austin Fadal grabbed a rebound for the Seawolves with one second remaining.

HOT AND COLD… On major factor in Saturday's outcome was CSUMB's hot-and-cold effort from beyond the arc. The Otters opened the the game making three of their first six while racing to an early lead. They missed 11 of their next 13 as Sonoma pulled ahead before finishing the game making five of their last six.

THEY'RE NOT FREE, THEY'RE COSTLY THROWS… The biggest factor (read most costly factor) in Saturday's outcome came at the line, where free throws proved very costly. The Otters attempted a season–low three free throws while the Seawolves went 20-of-27 from the stripe.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Levi Frankland/Jailen Nelson 17. REBOUNDS: Joe Wall 10. ASSISTS: Jailen Nelson 5. BLOCKS: Damjan Agovic/Jordan Archie/Javon Johnson 1. STEALS: Jordan Archie 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for their next two games, starting Thursday (Jan.12) with they head to Southern California for a dagte with Cal State Dominguez Hills. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of doubleheader action with the Otter women.
