Otters Hang On For Battle of the Bays Victory

Clutch shooting from the line late earns CSUMB 70-67 win

HAYWARD, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay came up clutch at the free-throw line in the closing moments to hold off Cal State East Bay for a 70–67 win Saturday afternoon in Pioneer Gym.

Jailen Nelson (Carlsbad HS) made all four of his free-throw attempts in the final two minutes of regulation, including two with nine seconds remaining, to account for the final score. In total, the Otters made 7-of-8 from the stripe late to account for their final seven points after East Bay had trimmed the CSUMB advantage to one with 11 seconds left.

The Otters threatened to pull away several times, with multiple opportunities to increase their advantage to double digits in the second half. But the Pioneers wouldn't go away, rallying to take a 54–53 lead with 6:56 to play before a pair of J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) free on the ensuing possession put CSUMB ahead to stay.

Nelson led three Otters in double figures with 18 points. Levi Frankland (Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia) added 17 points, a team–high six rebounds and a career–high five steals.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Tim Andreolli's desperation 3–point attempt from the corner hit the side of the backboard as the final horn sounded.

A THIEF IN THE AFTERNOON… Levi Frankland's career–high five steals Saturday at Cal State East Bay are tied for No. 9 on the Otter single–game list. Jailen Nelson joined the 5–steal club earlier this season with six in a win over Central Washington on Nov. 11.

50 FOR 55… With five treys in Saturday's win at Cal State East Bay, Joe Wall became the 16th player in CSUMB history to make at least 50 3–pointers in a season. Wall now has 52 threes through 14 games, good for No. 15 on the Otter single–season list. Next up is Charlie Tooley, who made 53 in both the 2019 and 2020 campaigns.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jailen Nelson 18; REBOUNDS: Levi Frankland 6; ASSISTS: Ameere Britton 4; BLOCKS: Levin Frankland/Charles Johnston 1; STEALS: Levi Frankland 5.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really proud of the guys. Not just because we won the game tonight, but more so because when we had lost games they stuck together. It's a great group. I love being around them win lose or draw." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to the friendly confines of The Kelp Bed to host a pair of game next week. The action kicks off Thursday (Jan. 19) with a visit from perennial CCAA contender Chico State. Doubleheader action begins with a women's tip-off at 5:30 p.m. The men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
