Otters Earn Key Points With Shutout 1-0 of San Bernardino

Milton's shutout makes Jose Madrigal's first collegiate goal a winner

SEASIDE, Calif. — After a pair of heartbreaking 1–goal losses on the road against nationally–ranked opponents, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's soccer team came home to earn three valuable points with a 1–0 shutout of in-form Cal State San Bernardino Friday night at Cardinale Stadium.

CSUMB improved to 3–4–2 overall and 1–2–0 in the CCAA. San Bernardino dipped to 4–2–3 and 0–2–1.

Sophomore Jose Madrigal (San Francisco/City Arts and Tech) scored a beauty for his first collegiate goal, volleying home a Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS) cross in the 40th minute for the game's lone marker. Sophomore goalkeeper Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS) protected that goal, making four saves for his first shutout of 2022.
The teams played on virtually even statistical footing. Both sides managed seven shots and five corners. Both teams put for shots on frame and were whistled offside three times. In the end, Milton made one more save and that proved to be the difference.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… the Otters successfully defended a corner kick in the 87th minute. It was the last threat for either team.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB… Jose Madrigal joined the ranks of Otter goals scorers with his first collegiate goal in Friday's 1–0 win over Cal State San Bernardino. He joins Roberto Banegas, Ronaldo Guardarrama, Javier Romero and Mason Ward as first time Otter goal scorers in 2022.

TAMING THE COYOTES… Matthias Milton has learned to tame the Coyotes. In two career appearances against Cal State San Bernardino, Milton was not allowed a goal over 200 scoreless minutes. Two of his three career collegiate shutouts have come at the Coyotes's expense.

STARTING HOT AT HOME… With Friday's 1–0 shutout of Cal State San Bernardino, CSUMB snapped a 5–match winless streak in CCAA home openers, dating back to a 2015 win over San Francisco State. The Otters are now 1–0–2 in CCAA home openers under Head Coach Graeme Jaap.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Jose Madrigal 1; ASSISTS: Mason Ward 1; POINTS: Jose Madrigal 2; SHOTS: Janos Kömmerling 2; SAVES: Matthias Milton 4.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–match homestand by hosting Cal State San Marcos Sunday (Oct. 2) at the Otter Sports Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 2 p.m. as the second match of doubleheader action.
