O’Mahony Olimpico Lifts Otters Over San Marcos

Junior defender Colin O'Mahony scores the lone goal in 1-0 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — As one of the top defenders in the CCAA, junior Colin O'Mahony is more accustomed to denying goals than scoring them. Nevertheless, O'Mahony was the offensive hero for Cal State Monterey Bay Sunday afternoon has his 79th minute Olimpico made the Otters 1–0 winners over visiting Cal State San Marcos at the Otter Sports Complex.

CSUMB (4–4–2, 2–2–0 CCAA) dominated the match statistically, out–shooting the Cougars 11–1, but struggled to solve San Marcos keeper Jesus Mentado by conventional means. Enter O'Mahony, who came forward to serve CSUMB's third corner of the day late in regulation. Mentado went up with Otter striker Julian Contreras (Watsonville HS), but the ball went over both of them before dipping under the crossbar and into the side net.

San Marcos caught a break when Otter defender Jordan Sime saw a straight red following a foul by Cougar defender Vincent Saldivar, who earned a yellow for his infraction. The CSUMB defense was able to absorb the resulting pressure, however, safely seeing out the final 10 minutes.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Otter keeper Matthias Milton bobbled then corralled a Vincent Saldivar corner at the near post with just under seven minutes remaining. It proved to be the last clear opportunity for San Marcos.

THERE'S NO PLACE LIKE HOME… The Otters improved to 11–5–6 at home under Head Coach Graeme Jaap with this weekend's sweep of Cal State San Bernardino and Cal State San Marcos.

KEEP IT CLEAN… Matthias Milton posted his second consecutive clean sheet with Sunday's shutout of Cal State San Marcos. He has not allowed a goal over the last 360 minutes and one second.

THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN… Colin O'Mahony became the seventh different Otter to score in a match through the first 10 contests of 2022.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Colin O'Mahony 1; ASSISTS: None; POINTS: Colin O'Mahony 2; SHOTS: Julian Contreras/Colin O'Mahony/Hugo Vargas-Rios 2; SAVES: None.

THE LAST WORD… "We are very proud of the boys. They were once again willing to put their bodies on the line for each other. That type of mentality is just as important as what you do with the ball in our program." – CSUMB Assistant Coach Andrew Livingston

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head back across the parking lot to Cardinale Stadium to host San Francisco State for a CCAA doubleheader Thursday (Oct. 6). The women will kickoff at 4:30 p.m. with the men scheduled for an 8 p.m. kickoff.
