Otters Pitch Another Shutout, Run Win Streak To Three

Roberto Banegas, Mason Ward score in 2-0 win over S.F. State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay got first half goals from Roberto Banegas (Marina HS/MPC) and freshman Mason Ward (Temecula Valley HS), and that was more than enough as a stout Otter defense ensured a 2–0 victory over visiting San Francisco State Thursday night in Cardinale Stadium.

The victory, CSUMB's third in a row, lifted the Otter record to 5–4–2 overall and 3–2–0 in the CCAA. S.F. State dipped to 3–4–4 and 1–3–0.

Banegas gave the Otters the only goal they would need in the seventh minute when he ran on to a short, clever through ball from Garrett Hayes (Lake Forest/Irvine Valley College) and found himself alone with Gator goalkeeper Matias Herrera Fuentes at point blank range. He surgically beat the Gator senior for his team–leading sixth goal of the season.
Ward doubled the Otter advantage just before the half hour with an effort that mirrored the Banegas marker. This time, freshman Ronaldo Guardarrama (San Marcos/Madison HS) slipped the pass to Ward at the top of the box. Ward dribbled to the spot, from where he beat a charging Herrera Fuentes for his third of 2022.

Sophomore goalkeeper Matthias Milton (Elk Grove/Jesuit HS) made to saves to earn his third shutout.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Mason Ward gave the Otters a 2–0 lead in the 29th minute. San Francisco State put just two shots on frame over the balance of the match.

KEEP IT CLEAN, MILTON EDITION… Matthias Milton posted his third consecutive clean sheet with Thursday's shutout of San Francisco State. He has not allowed a goal over the last 450 minutes and one second.

KEEP IT CLEAN, TEAM EDITION… CSUMB's 2–0 shutout of San Francisco State was its third consecutive clean sheet. It's the first time the Otters have shutout three straight opponents since moving to the NCAA Division II level for the 2004 season. In case you're wondering, the Otter record for consecutive shutouts is four, set from Oct. 2–12, 2002.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… GOALS: Roberto Banegas/Mason Ward 1; ASSISTS: Ronaldo Guardarrama/Garrett Hayes 1; POINTS: Roberto Banegas/Mason Ward 2; SHOTS: Colin O'Mahony 3; SAVES: Matthias Milton 2.

THE LAST WORD… "We thought the guys started the game very well and produced one of our best halves of the season with our willingness to run and defend for the team. The second half, we didn't move the ball as well as we would have liked, but defended very well and kept another clean sheet and still created some great chances." – CSUMB Head Coach Graeme Jaap

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road to face conference leader Sonoma State Sunday (Oct. 9) in Rohnert Park.
